New for 2014, the Remington R51 Sub-Compact pistol was designed as a modern version of Remington’s original Model 51. Originally designed in 1915 by John Pedersen, the Model 51 was considered ahead of its time, and soon became one of Gen. George Patton’s personal sidearms during WWII.
While designing the new R51 Sub-Compact, Remington aimed to modernize Pedersen’s design to work with 9mm Luger and .40 S&W cartridges. They also wanted to maintain the personality, shooting characteristics and size of the original Model 51.
Enter the R51 Sub-Compact—a modern, concealable pistol with the ability to handle +P factory ammunition. The R51 uses a hammer-fired, Pedersen action with a locked breech and fixed 416 stainless steel barrel. It also features drift-adjustable sights and an aluminum frame with 25 lines-per-inch checkering on the front grip strap.
An ambidextrous magazine release allows left- and right-handed shooters to eject the flush-fitting, seven-round magazines—two of which come standard with the pistol.
Additional versions of the R51 Sub-Compact line will include one with a built-in Crimson Trace Laserguard, as well as another model with a threaded barrel for suppressor attachment.
The standard Remington R51 Sub-Compact will be available Feb. 1, 2014 at a price of $389.

This pistol looks awesome. Very excited.

I tried to preorder from the local firearms dealers but it was no-go. One said they simply do not do preorders. The other dealer said, "I'm not taking any pre-orders on guns right now. I did not receive quite a few different models that were introduced last year all year long." Huh? Doesn't the store order the firearms they want to sell? Little confused by that comment. Both are Remington dealers. Guess that means I will either order online or buy from one of the large chains (Academy, Gander, etc).

Here is a review from Gary Paul Johnston after putting 200 rounds down range and observing a total of 5000 rounds being put down range.

Awesome picture out of the review:

There was a lot of negativity in the comments to the article by Mac, perhaps as one poster said "sour grapes" It does not deter me or dampen my enthusiasm for the R51.

I saw the review and was underwhelmed by the negatives. What I read as the biggest things IMHO were positives, not DA and grip safety.

But that's me.

I'm in the same boat as you Bill, I have wanted a small single stack no manual safety no DA pistol for some time now. Was ready to go Glock until the 42 was announced as .380! I can't wait to get my hands on this one.

Same here, a little disappointed that the G42 was 380, but, the R51 seems promising. I noticed in the OP that the MSRP was 389, but I keep seeing in other places an MSRP of 409 and 419. Can someone shed a little light on this, Thanks

Remington said $389 initially when they showed off the pistol for the first time at Gunsite. Maybe that was their aim for pricing? And not a definite price? Regardless, Remington (and the lead designer of the pistol) said at SHOT Show the MSRP is $420. I imagine the street price to be under $380 when the buzz dies down. And I expect the first batch to command every bit of the $420 MSRP.

Not sure how much the old model 51 will have in common with the modern r-51. Still cool to see the original and all its parts though.

New video from the NRA:

Also found a video of a teen speed field stripping it, but it didn't show any internals.

In the official video, one of the Remington employees racks the slide with one finger. I was curious if he was hitting it hard to get it to move. This video, from an unnamed show, has a woman rack it using one finger as well:

I think since it has no guide rod with spring, the spring that goes around the barrel has less tension. And is much, much easier to pull back the slide.

Ouch, the incorrect reassembly is very disturbing.

Yes it is a bit alarming, as well as the slide bite/safety bite.

I am not dissuaded at all, It's a new type of Semi auto and who among us knew how to disassemble a Glock or 1911 intuitively ? There is bound to be a learning curve, I certainly expect it. To state that the gun is fundamentally flawed is a stretch, More like sour grapes for not being invited.

But TTAG wasn’t on the guest list to Big Green’s all-expenses-paid junket in the desert to test Stage One guns,

To its credit, the R51 ran flawlessly — so long as you put it together right.
