I was wondering what people are using for ammo in their 597? As you know most semi-auto .22 rifles and pistols need consistant quality ammo to cycle correctly. I have found that high velocity (1200fps or higher) seems to cycle nicely as long as they arent bulk ammo. I seem some new stuff coming out targeted for AR type .22 cal rifles. Has anyone tried this? I currently use CCI Mini-Mag HP and never have a problem but for .22 ammo is pricey. What are you guys using?

Almost all the ammo I've used has been the bulk stuff, and I've had a lot of issues with my factory 10 round mag., especially from the bulk Federals from Walmart. I had a little better luck using the Remington Thunderbolt solid point ammo in my 30 round mag. when I only loaded it up with 20 rounds. Have yet to try the Rem. Golden Bullets yet in my 30 round, but will let you know if they cycle decently.

Ty, try some quality non-bulk ammo, it will be night and day. does your magazine have trouble feeding or is the ammo stovepiping in the action? The bulk ammo has a waxt film on it most of the time so the bullets dont touch in the bulk box unlike a box of 100 cci that are in there own little holder. These do not have wax and cycle very well and are very consistent with very minimal issues.

Thanks Pat, I'll try that. I'll have to just deal with that bulk stuff until I'm done with it. It has a lot of feeding issues along with FTEs. I sprayed some Rem Oil in my 30 round mag, and that seemed to help some.

Pat, I tried out the CCI Mini Mags in the 100 round box, and was very happy with the results. Only gone through one box so far, but the results have been far superior to the bulk ammo. On my 30 rd. mag the only problem I really had was the 2nd round didn't pop up far enough to feed, but when I shook the gun to get it up it fired. Still had 1 of 10 not feed properly in my 10 rd. mag, but if it feeds that well with the 30 rd. mag I will continue to buy it. Thanks again for the tip Pat.

I tried just loading up 25 rounds of the CCI Mini Mags in my 30 rd mag. tonight with perfect results. All 25 fired perfectly! I've had so much trouble with my 597 that I was ecstatic with how they performed. The extra cost is worth it for these bullets. Thanks again Big Pat!

Is there a way to get the wax off the bulk ammo in a bulk and safe manner?

Luke, I don't know if there is or not. You might just have to shoot through what you have left like I did, then just strip your gun down and give it a good cleaning.

Just joined but have owned my 597 for about 20 years. When I bought it I also bought a 500 rd brick of Rem Thunderbolts. The rifle worked fine the first 100 rounds but then the gun wasn't used for about 12 years at which point I was having numerous jams and FTF's. I tore-down the gun and cleaned and lubed multiple times including the mags and no dice. I finally bought a Ruger 10/22 and a brick of Federal CPHP and decided to give the 597 one last chance. The 597 jammed with the Thunderbolts but work perfectly with the Federal. The 10/22 not only jammed with the Thunderbolts but I had to pry a round that was stuck about 80% into the chamber! And don't ask me why I didn't try other ammo sooner. I know that my handguns can be ammo-finicky. Duhhhh...

Well, I bought the 10/22 to replace the 597 but now it's like Buy-One-Get-One Free! I have 2 great rifles in .22lr. I also hear that CCI's run well. Any other feedback on ammo that's good and that which is trouble?

All my 22s are way older than 20yrs, and all mine like the standard velocity ammo. Much tighter groups with standards...

I've had jamming issues with Rem T-bolts and nothing but pleasure with Federal copper plated.

Late reply i know but I recently purchased a 597 and I've been blown away by it. It's eaten everything I've fed it even rem bulk! I've shot subsonics and so far it absolutly loves those, stay away from hyper velocity junk. I'm currently getting 1/2 MOA out of mine using federal gold medal.

Always liked the 597. Heard they dumped the 22 mag. version earlier this year. Ended up with the Ruger American Compact in 22 mag and am more than satisfied but a semi sounds like fun. Wonder how it fed the mag rounds. Anybody hear of feeding and extraction problems? Ruger had some problems with the 10/22 mag line I did hear.

Our son, who is married now and has a toddler daughter, has all of a sudden been interested into shooting again. Both him and his younger sister used to go to the range with me all the time, then they fell out of interest. Our daughter is a second year college student, and still has not really wanted to get back into shooting, but our son has. So, the wife and I decided to give him the cash (Christmas present) so he could go with me and buy his first rifle. I was happy he picked the Remmy!

He went with a standard model 597, and we picked up a decent bipod for him. It was a scoped combo model with the Remington marked 3-9x32mm scope. I showed him how to get his scope squared away and blue loctited down, gave him one of my padded rifle cases and a basic cleaning kit with .22 patches. We got his bipod mounted on the front and he also picked himself up a spare 10 round magazine, along with one of the Remington 30? rounders.

After we got his stuff all done, I had to admit that I think I will be getting myself one of these soon...maybe tax return time. I like the "full-size" rifle feel of the gun, and after watching some youtube stuff on them, was pretty impressed as to their accuracy. I have some 10/22's, and I like them, but never really considered the 597...after seeing his and helping him with it, I think I need to change that. Now, after he gets back home to Ohio, he needs to get it to the range and give the wife and I a range report! ;)

I've owned a 597 for about 2 months now, and I've been very pleased with the two cci brand ammo that I fed it (standard velocity, and mini mag hp). Although I've tried other ammo such as federal game shok, browning bpr, and winchester super x, it seems that my 597 loves cci ammo, and shoots them the best. I have not tried the cci quiet though, because I have read that in many cases, these subsonic rounds will not cycle.
