Hi Guys,

I'm new to the forum and wanted to get your thoughts on a problem I recently experienced with my Model 700 XCR Compact Tactical in .308. Up to this point I had been very pleased with this rifle.

Background info: Purchased in 2009, rifle has exactly 89 rounds through it, primarily used for shooting at the range and whitetail deer hunting.

Issue: On a recent hunt, as a deer approached, I eased the safety forward (to off) and immediately the gun went off, to my shock. The forearm was resting on the side rail of the stand and my trigger hand was no where near the trigger or even the trigger guard (eased safety forward with thumb and index finger to eliminate any noise). The gun was stationary and there was no clothing or anything else near trigger. I've never had this happen in almost 30 years of hunting.

This gun is supposed to have the 40x trigger ( I have no idea how you look at it and tell ). It was originally set up for about 2-2.5 lbs and never changed again.

When I got home, I flipped safety off and (with the gun unloaded of course) proceeded to cyle the bolt about 10 times and about 3-4 times the firing pin would fall when the bolt was closed. I checked the pull wt on the trigger utilizing my digital Lyman Trigger gauge and it measured about 1 # 10 oz (lighter than I had originally set the trigger 2 yrs ago).

Further testing and results were as follows:
- I could never replicate the issue of flipping the safety and the firing pin falling immediately.
- Trigger set at 4# 7 oz - no issues when cycling bolt with safety off
- Backing trigger adjustment screw one full turn (lightening) and pull wt about 3# 8 oz - about 1 out of 15 cycles of the bolt with safety off the firing pin would fall upon closing the bolt (normal cycling, not slamming it closed).
- Backing the trigger adjustment screw out another 1/2 turn, the firing pin would fall approximately 7 out of 30 bolt cycles with safety off (this is the point where the trigger pull should have been about #3, but the pull was not consistent on the Lyman gauge from shot to shot. Checked another rifle with Lyman and it was completely consistent)
- Backing the trigger adjustment screw out another 1/2 turn, the firing pin would fall approximately 1 out of every 3 bolt cycles with safety off. Again measuring the trigger pull wt varied widely from shot to shot, i'd say it averaged around 2 lbs... some less, some more.

This is a safety issue and I have no idea why it just all of the sudden started happening. The gun has not been dropped, bumped etc. I've never even taken the stock off of it. I've always heard great things about the 40X trigger but this gun now has me scared of it. There is obviously a problem with it, the pull wt is not consistent at all from shot to shot (testing it in the same manner after each shot) when the pull wt reaches a certain pt (around 3# or less).

I will be contacting Remington this week but thought I would throw it on this site and get some feedback from you Remington guys to see if you had any ideas or had ever experienced anything similar. Of course the 2 yr warranty as up about 6 mo ago so not sure what to expect out of Remington.

Sorry for the lengthy post but I thought the details of what I tested were necessary.

Thanks,
Scott
