Hello. Thanks for posting the question.

Your dads 742 will chamber both round nose or spire point as easily as the other. The main problem with 742s chambering and extracting is that they are not tolerant of dirty, rusted or pitted chambers. The muzzle-end cleaning method oftentimes leaves the chamber with carbon and unburned powder which can set up problems if left stored that way. The chamber can be cleaned with a specially shaped chamber brush from the ejection port and it's a pain in the ass.

Beyond keeping the rifle impeccably clean and lubed, I don't think the bullet profile will give you any reliability concers.

Good luck with your inherited rifle!

So it's hard to have a 742?

My way for chamber cleaning from the muzzle is to use a bore brush the next size larger than the case diameter. It will have to be screwed on the cleaning rod thru the ejection port . Twist against the threads and it won't unscrew. It is a PITA but it works.

I'm considering buying a cheap aluminum cleaning rod, preferably one in sections. Bend at 90 degree angle and screw on brush. Sort of like the old chamber cleaning tool for M-14's that used a section of cleaning rod. This could only be pushed back and forth.

I have some flexible shaft chamber cleaning brushes with T handles that work really well. Search the suppliers, and you'll find them.

Try heating up an old toothh brush and bend to suit the angle you need. Cheat easy way to get it clean.
