New member here, I've been wanting a moderate cost 12 gauge semi auto and researched several and had pretty much decided on a Beretta Outlander or Stoeger M3000. The Beretta was more than I wanted to spend but my local gun store had a sale on used guns and there was a dirty but nice Camo Stoeger for $340 and I liked the way it fit me. I went back to purchase it and I noticed in the rack right next to it was a brand new condition 1187 Sportsman Field with great walnut stocks. I didn't really want a Remington because they're a little heavy but I tried it and it fit me better than the Stoeger and loved the wood stocks and for $398 was below my target budget. So I took the gun home yesterday and REALLY like how it handles and I have a light 20 gauge SxS for quail and Pheasant so the little bit heavier 1187 should be fine for everything else. My only concern is, the stocks appear to have very little if any protective finish over the stain. I was thinking of putting a coat of polyurethane or Tru Oil over the wood to give it a little more protection and possibly make it look better also, any thoughts or recommendations.

Remington's finishes are pretty durable. Try dripping a little water on it and see if it beads up and rolls off, or soaks in. I'd test it first before I added another top layer of coating.

Does anyone know what kind of factory finish is on the 1187 Sportsman, oil, polyurethane, or? I've heard that its fine to put Tru oil over an existing oil finish but its sometimes risky on polyurethane.
