So yesterday I went to Cabela's and put a 783 in .243 (22 inch barrel) on layaway for my youngest son. After that one gets paid off, the older boy will get his 783 put on layaway.

After that one gets paid off, I will put the 783 Compact in .243 on layaway for the wife and youngest daughter.

That one for the older son (will be 16 this year) I just don't know what caliber. I may go with the .308 so we can save some money by only having to buy two different caliber ammunition for the household.

Any thoughts?

Can't go wrong with a .308...

I'm looking into a AR10 style rifle in .308 right now...Pennsylvania hunters should be allowed to use that style rifle as of today or tomorrow according to the NRA/ILA legislation alerts I receive.

I own a 783 in .270 and it shoots very well. I chose it over the savage because of the thicker Magnum profile barrel and the stock seems a little stiffer.
