I recently bought 2 remington sportsman 58s for $400 there are no barrel serial numbers just serial numbers on the receiver. One has a serial number 46660V with a full barrel and 1 bead at the muzzle and this barrel looks and feels a lot older. The other one is number 79440V and that has a vent rib full barrel on it.

I want to know if there is a way to know if these were the original barrels that came on the gun and how old these are. I know that there were only made in 1956 to 1963.

I have looked for the last 3 days for any info and can find anything. All the sites say is look for a number on the barrel, we'll mine doesn't have any.

Any help would be appreciated of steer me in the right direction. Thank you. I don't know how to post pictures on here sorry

The Remington Model 58 also called the Sportsman 58 is a semi-automatic shotgun manufactured by Remington Arms from 1956 to 1963.

It was Remington's first gas operated shotgun and was manufactured in 12, 16, & 20 gauges until it was replaced by the Model 1100.

The Gun Control Act of 1968 required that all newly manufactured firearms produced by licensed manufacturers in the United States and imported into the United States bear a serial number.

Firearms manufactured prior to the Gun Control Act remained exempt from the serial number requirement.

According to the ATF...the serial number must be conspicuously engraved, cast or stamped (impressed) on the firearm frame or receiver...(not the barrel).

Barrels can be swapped out for any number of reasons, hence the receiver is stamped because it contains the parts that make a it a firearm.

The only things that MUST be stamped on a barrel are the Guage, Caliber, Manufacturer, and Model Designation (if assigned).

Stepper13 so is there a way to lookup the serial number to find out if I have the original barrels on my guns?

The main question you must ask yourself is do the wear on the barrels match the rest of the gun...ie, any metal other than the barrels.

Looking up the serial number will not help determine if the barrels are original to the gun...
