I just read a good deal about the Rem. 700 rifle and how the "trigger connector" was poorly designed and fired while: safety was on, touching the bolt, taking the safety off. I am wondering if my 742 Woodsmaster 30-06 has the same problem and trigger or did they change the design in this gun as opposed to the 700's?
I Saw another article about 870's having a "fire while in safe mode" to. Is that true? The 870 20 GA Express was purchased new in 2010 or 11'.
My 742 was a hand me down from my Dad. He bought it I think in the late 60's or early 70's. It now has less than 1000 rounds fired through it. I'm aware of the slides wearing out problem and newly aware of the bolt wear problem causing excessive head space in the chamber.
Are there trigger safety problems with either gun. I've been thinking of retiring the 742 if there are serious trigger design /safety issues and getting a Ruger Mini-30 308 cal. to replace it. I have used the 742 for 10 years and only had it jam once where the ejecting shell was caught between the next round coming up from the mag. and the ejection port. The only other problem I've had is the 742's accuracy had fallen off suddenly the last time I went deer hunting. I could not get it to site in, it kept jumping around and wouldn't zero. I even allowed 10 mins. between shots, in cold weather, for the barrel to cool down shooting at 50 & 100 yds. I have a new Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 scope that I want to mount to see if that fixes the accuracy problem?
Does the Remington 742 have a safe trigger design?

I have not heard of any trigger issues with the 742 myself. I am not sure how the design differs from the older 700 trigger design. I have heard of the jamming issue with some of the Model 742s after I purchased a Model Four [7400] back in 81. No jams but mine does not see a lot of use do to traveling out of state to use it. Bolt and gas system differ from yours though. I would mount the new scope and see if it helps accuracy problem. Hope it improves and you can keep it as they are beautiful guns.

I've always thought it was a beautiful gun and will of coarse keep it. I just hope I can keep hunting with it. My Dad had a 1.75-5x 40 Bushnell scope put on it and I can't see far enough to site it in at 100 yds. so I bought the Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 and a set of 4 hole Millett rings. I'll have to go and mount it soon because firearms deer season opens in 2 weeks. After looking at the Mini-30 again, I'll probably pass, although it would be fun to own.
