Always been a fan or Remington's older catalog offerings. Perhaps it's just grasping stuff from "my day". But have also always heard that the 788's were extremely accurate and who doesn't have room for another .308 in the gun safe? So I had to grab one. Not here yet, as everything you think of in "days" on the outside takes "weeks" here in bush Alaska. Very excited. It has a basic Tasco 4x32 scope on it but I think a nice Burris Fullfield II 3-9x40 will go just great. Also it's a vintage piece, meaning a scratch on the stock won't bother me at all....they all just add character, right?

Aside from the triggers, which I hear corrode up a bit, anything else that should help make this into a great woods rifle?

This the one Remington should have come back with instead of the econo jobs like the 710 and 770. Yes they were known for accuracy with that rear lock-up. Set up you mention should make a great hunting rifle. Another that can be tough to find used at all.

The 788's are lovely rifles. I've had many but managed to keep one in 7-08 that the wife loves. There are only two issues that I've had. 1. The bolt doesn't lock with the safety and I've had a couple FTF's until I learned to make sure the bolt is fully closed while slipping off the safety. 2. they don't have an overly powerful ejector and I've had empties rattle off the scope and fall back in the port. Simple things that you can deal with once you know about them. Did you get the rifle or the carbine version? Enjoy!

Rifle version. I don't have pics, because it's a pretty plain hardwood stock, but she shoots well. I sighted it in with PPU's 180-gr .308 Winchester load and really love it. No problem with ejects from this one, and I don't have any trigger issues either. A Timney replacement is always an option though.
