I have a 597 with the standard barrel. I recently purchased an OEM Remington 597 heavy barrel to swap out on it. I figured I would have to do a little work to the barrel channel on the OEM synthetic stock to make it work and that was it. However, when I tried to mate the heavy barrel to the receiver cover, the cover would not fit over the barrel. The heavy barrel is turned down to the standard barrel OD for a small section that the cover fits over, but there is still about a 3/16" area that is not turned down that will not fit. Has anyone done a swap with their 597? Is there a different receiver cover for the heavy barrels? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Does anyone have a 597 heavy barrel that they could measure the distance of the section of the barrel that is machined (turned) down to the smaller OD. Maybe I got a bad barrel or something. ?

Welcome to the Remington Owners Forum Eddie !!

Looking at the pictures on the link below...it seems the receiver covers are different between the standard and heavy barrels.

Thanks for the welcome and the reply Shooter13! It's hard to tell from the pics, but maybe there is a difference. My heavy barrel is machined down to fit in the stock receiver, just not enough. It still needs about 3/8" longer to fit (the OD is fine, just stopped a little short of the length it needed to be). And it's an OEM barrel. I tried contacting Remington, but will have to wait for a reply. It is very frustrating because I'm in the middle of building this and now I'm on hold. Thanks again.
