I have recently gotten a 700 mil spec 5R .308 and was wondering if anyone has found what grain and load has worked best for consistant accurate shots , I went to the range yesterday and ran 3 different loads and grains and could not stay consistant

When you ask about bullet weights and loads are you inquiring because you are a handloader? Or are you just trying out different factory/commercial/mil-spec ammo you purchased?

I am hoping to find a factory load to use , I no longer have a loader to customize a load , was hoping someone else had found a combination that worked well that I could find in a factory load that was the same or close to a custom as possible

If GM308M Federal Gold Medal Match with the 168-gr Sierra MatchKing bullet doesn't shoot pretty damn well in a rifle, you can eliminate ammunition because there are issues with the rifle.
http://www.federalpremium.com/products/ ... spx?id=150 My local Academy Sports has it right now for $24.95/20 It rivals some of the best handloads around.

Also give real serious thought to Black Hills Ammunition.
They supply a large portion of precision centerfire ammo for the US Army Marksmanship Unit, and also precision sniper ammo for troops in combat. http://www.black-hills.com/ http://www.midwayusa.com/product/280175 ... -box-of-20

For precision shooting, I use the Federal Gold Medal w/ the 168 grain Sierra Match King bullets. Quite surprisingly though, the Remington Express Core Lok't PSP in 150 grain is almost an equivalent out to about 300 yds. Beyond that, I won't ask for too much without a Sierra Match King. My .308 is a Pre-'64 Winchester Model 88. Although it's classified as a lever action rifle, it is actually a Hybrid... Lever operated bolt action with the 3-lug rotating bolt. It's all I've ever needed in a .308 for both hunting and target work. My next rifle will be a Savage Model 11/111 Trophy Hunter XP in .260 Rem. The only reason is that at 800-1200 yards, I think the .260 in 140 grain will do whatever the .308 in 150 grain can do to the center of the target. I found another Model 88 in .243 that I'm thinking about converting to .260 Rem to shoot this 'wildcat' cartridge through. Although this wildcat is a necked down .308, it's not really a barrel burner. The .260 Rem is a very interesting cartridge and is worth reading up on if you're serious about precision long-range shooting.

Yep, the .260 is an amazing long-range cartridge.

The bullet the military developed for the 5R is called the M118LR it was originally 168 grain but would only stay supersonic for 800 yards the military went to the sierra match king 175 grain because the boat tail had a more aerodynamic end !!! Winchester casings needed to be used for the internal volume they have federal and Remington ran out before 1000 yards can't remember exactly the grain of winchester spherical powder !!! We came along way since the M118LR was invented and we can use temperature stable powder now with more juice and stay supersonic for over 1200 yards !!! Wind had less effects on the 175 grain too !!! A couple years ago the Marines tried 155 VLD sierra match kings and we're shocked they almost outperformed the M118LR !! At 500 fps faster the wind had less effects on its trajectories but they kept the M118LR for its weight in glass and wall penitration !!! Two last things a sniper put 3 rounds though a .210 hole at two hundred yards !!! He then stepped it up 200 up to 500 yards and grouped .710 less than a quarter of three quarters of a inch the guns riflings. Work and this year the 300 win mag 5R Mil Spec is out !!! I'm going to find out how much they are !! It's a 1 in 10 twist 5R 28 inch 300 win mag welcome to the future! !!!

I just wanted to see what people that of a recipe I found and used 100 times !! It uses a 208 Hornady AMAX in a 5R mil spec 308 with a 11
25 twist!! I maxed out my range at 600 meters with a very solid hit to a 18 inch gong because of the weight of the bullet !!! Yes it was a very solid sound !! I didn't think the 308 and the 208 grain bullet would match but the B.C of the A Max is so very high it seems to work great for that twist !! Wondering if anyone else used the 208 Amax in their 308? Man, that has got to be a LOOOONG bullet. A 25-twist barrel no less?
The A-Max bullet is very good IMO.

No no a 11.25 twist !!! But a read about it and everything I read is positive! !

And yes it is a very long bullet it is 1.5 inches long it seals perfectly helping with both the sealing of gases and the ability to get close to the lands on the 700P Remington with there extra long throats . The recommend oal is 3.340 and I was able to get mine .040 thousands off the land with my 300 win mag at 3.940!!!

You obviously know a handful about precision hand loading. Good stuff!
