I purchased the R51 specifically for the advertised light cocking force, and the expected light perceived recoil. I also wanted a thin, single stack 9mm for concealed carry. Given the utter failure that the R51 has developed into, especially with regard to an extreme lack of reliability - mine are going back for a refund. The Walther CCP looks to be the gun that the R51 should have been. I personally prefer the alloy frame of the R51, but otherwise, the Walther (on paper) appears to be the superior gun. It is basically the same dimensions (only slightly taller, but possessing and extra round of capacity in the trade), same weight, and same width.
Even if the R51 has been exactly what was advertised (and worked) the Walther appears to be the superior firearm.
- It too boasts a fixed barrel
- appears to be MUCH easier to disassemble
- same light weight
- same thin width
- Uses a gas delayed blowback system (similar to tried & true to HK P7 series) to provide soft felt recoil
- Because of the gas system, also has a light slide spring leading to diminished required cocking force
- Produced by a company that has proven track record with numerous pistol models - Unlike Remington with only one other, a rehash of the 1911...
- Appears to have NOTHING to do with the Freedom Group

GOOD CHOICE!!!
I was thinking of that also. I have the Walther PPQ which is the "Big Brother" to the CCP from all I can see. I really love the PPQ it is everything you could ask of a 9MM weapon. I have my order in with 2 distributors .... waiting to see who gets it first. Personally the Doutone really perks my interest from an aesthetic standpoint. |

Walther makes great firearms...
I own a Vintage 1942 Spreewerk CYQ P-38 with Waffen marks and a 1972 Walther PPK/s... |

Personally, I'm not a fan of polymer framed guns although I can live with aluminum alloys.

Speaking of Walthers, I lucked into a nice P5 about a month ago at my LGS. I thought I had seen a PP there on my last visit. He only had the P5 (SN 101xxx). I bought it not knowing anything about it. I paid less than $800 for it with 2 mags, the box, and its test fire target. It's a model imported by Interarms.
I have shot it at the range several times. It's accurate and fun to shoot. I t fits my hand better than the R51 too. The R51 now lives in the Walther's plastic box (fits nicely). The P5 is now my main EDC (J frame 38 is my other). I bought a kydex SOB holster and an Austrian police OWB leather holster. In shorts with deep pockets I can carry it in an Uncle Mike pocket holster. The quality of the P5 is vastly superior to that of the R51 IMHO. I trust the Walther as much as I do my revolvers. I never carried the R51. I fixed its rear sight by having a screw installed. I replaced the barrel with one I bought on eBay (one that passes the plunk test except with Winchester white box FMJ), but now the mags drop out at random times. I'm keeping it in hopes it will be the Edsel of the gun world and worth more in a few years! |

Going with Walther sure sounds like a wise choice. You've obviously done your homework!

Well folks, let's face it the R51 is dead! Remington has disowned it. If you call CS or E-mail Remington they pretend the gun never existed. Even if they managed to get a "fix" for the damn thing they will never sell any, the stench of failure is too strong with this gun. Plus the fact that Remington never owned up to the problem, basically denied there was a problem and never bothered to issue a recall on a gun that had serious problems and could have caused injury to its owner! Might as well close this section of the Forum!

The Pedersen design is a good one. Why ever buy a firearm when it first appears is mind boggling to me. That's why I laugh at plastic guns to this day and depend on a hundred year old design. I'm glad there's all this discord over this rather unattractive sidearm. Now that it is being reintroduced with the web drowning in 'experts'full of pumped up knowledge, prices will fall and make it cheap and easy to get.

It occurs to me that Pederson is probably rolling over in his grave. ~John
