Hello all. I just received a nice model 742 from a buddy of mine. He has a shoulder problem and is no longer able to shoot it without hurting for a week. It was passed down to him from his father whom got it from his brother after he died. Needless to say my buddy NEVER cleans anything until it breaks down then he has someone else(me) do it for him. When I got it the darn thing was in great shape to be 40 years old but boy was it ever dirty. I took my time and read up on the process and watched the couple videos I could find to give me a starting point and jumped in head first.
I got it apart quickly and went to cleaning starting with the bolt. From what I understand the bolt is the same in the 7400 as the 742 and 740 except the 7400 requires removing a staked pin to remove bolt from action arms. Anyway, I got the bolt in a tin cookie can to spray it down good with rem action cleaner to sit. Before I did that all I did to the bolt was remove the pivot pin that broke the locking lug and bolt body apart..after spraying and letting it sit when I went to scrub with a toothbrush I noticed 2 springs and a small detent type pin and the bolt latch. After studying the diagram online I figured out the bigger of the two springs was the firing pin return spring and the smaller pin and spring was the bolt latch pivot pin and spring.BUT according to the video I watched there should be another flat pin and spring that sit where the pointy part of the bolt latch sits and I don't have it. When I look over the parts diagram I can't seem to find any such piece but I have seen a reference to it in a couple places..needless to say I don't think in a million years I could have lost it because everything went directly into the cookie tin just for accidents like this one parts won't go everywhere.
I guess my question is to anyone with a good knowledge of the 740,742 and possibly the 7400 bolt and locking lug assembly, please tell me if I'm crazy or what. Is there a extra flat pin and spring that goes in the hole the hook part of bolt latch goes in? I have put it all back together and it seems to work fine. Bolt goes to rear smoothly now and rotates into battery when released. I put in a round and it went into battery and then kicked the live round out when bolt handle was pulled to rear. I never shot it before I broke it down but he said it worked fine last time he shot it. Any and all help in the matter would be greatly appreciated. If need be I can break back down to take pics if what I'm saying doesn't sink in, but I think you'll get the general picture if you've got any experience with it.
Thanks in advance, Jason

I have one too. Check Brownell's site for diagrams. Numrich also, http://www.gunpartscorp.com/. There are others as well. Unfortunately most do not have good detail. Some parts can be ordered though.

Hi Jason, how's your 742 doing? Did it require more parts or was it good as it was?
Thanks. R, Steve |
