A few years back I went to a machinery auction and lo and behold, the guy threw in a few firearms that weren't listed so interest was vague. Out of the few, I picked up an 1100 for lunch money and a 700BDL stainless in 338 RUM for the price of a fancy date. The seller ran me down and gave me a box and a half of ammo and said it was too much for him to shoot. I've been a 338 fan for a long time and took it to the range and thought that even though recoil was hefty, it was manageable so headed out looking for more ammo. From what I saw then and what I see now I'd have to say that the 300 RUM is the most popular followed by the 7mm RUM and the 338 coming in a distant last. Is anyone seeing anything different? I have the dies and all the components so will start reloading for the 338 when the time comes and I believe it has great potential for the handloader but is it like the 8mm rem mag in that it's just to much rifle for most applications and that's why folks shied away from it. Let's here your RUM stories.

I think yes on the .338, too much for most people and expensive to shoot factory (costs more than 45-70 fer chrissakes) definitely not for linking at $2+ a round. I think its a specialized round. May eventually fade, but reloaders will keep it around awhile.

The first box of factory ammo I found I paid over $4.00/round. That's when I went shopping on the net and found some for under $50/box including frt. I bought plenty so in the end I'll have enough brass to play with it for a long time. I've also been on another site watching a LH SS Laminated 7RUM for sale and the guy isn't getting any bites. Maybe the marketing folks overestimated the power of the term MAGNUM and it's overcorruption became it's demise.
