This was an interesting post in the comments section:

"Patrick • 6 days ago

I personally worked on this project. I had advised of potential issues early on but the attitude of the decision makers were, "I don't want to hear about that". I specifically mentioned about the variance in the castings that would create problems in the machining process for dimensional repeatable accuracy. Sorry to hear about your defective product.

And I wanted one so much...

I was on Remington's site today and notice there is no mention of the R51 anywhere.

Only place you will find the R51 is in their digital 2014 Product catalog and that's it. Signed up for email updates on their handguns back in January for their 'new handgun website' and still nothing. I'm thinking that Remington wishes now that this R51 concept never even happened. I bet S&W along with other American gun manufacturers are liking it though. In the beginning of this whole mess I considered trading mine for a Remington 1911, and although good from what I hear, I cannot bring myself to buy a Remington at this time. Losing the once great big green is like losing by best duck dog.....damn.

And yet, page 13 of the July 2014 American Rifleman is another full page ad for the R51. Apparently no one has told marketing there there are some problems.

Ha, that's why I am here checking in after signing off on this pistol quite a while ago. I saw the ad in my mag that came today. I am still hopeful that a 2nd gen 3rd gen build will be the ticket.

Thanks for posting the link, the comments are almost as interesting. I am getting closer to asking for a refund for my R51. An early death of the R51 might make it a collectors item, but I am thinking more like 'dust collector' right now.

Remington should be issuing a statement about the status of the R51. At the very least something to R51 owners.

Has anyone been able to look up the status of their R51 (or Model 700, I have one of those too.) on the Remington Online Repair Progress Tracking page?

http://remington.com/forms/repair-information.aspx

It hasn't worked for any of the many numbers I have received.

I got a Refund ticket started yesterday after spending 3+ hours on the phone listening to their horrible hold music over a 2 day period. Persistence is what is required. I am convinced there will be no "Fix" out side of a complete re engineered design. I was one of those idiots who purchased one at above MSRP. I was told I will be refunded what I paid for it. So I just ordered a Sig P320 from Bud's with free shipping it will cost me about 100 bucks more in total. Check out Hickok45's video he gave it a excellent review, Remington did not dare send him one because he will give an unbiased review.

Hey remmy, If you're looking at a 1911 but hesitating because of Big Green, the Colt 1991 is going for a bit less than the Remingtons. I have to say I would have the exact same attitude as you about buying another Remington product. Check Gander Mountain (if there is one close to you) and look at the Colts and Remingtons and you'll probably find the tried, tested, and reliable old Colts a bean or two cheaper than the Remingtons, and about 3 or 4 beans cheaper than the Sig 1911s. And, their .45ACP ammo is right in line with market prices. They have rebates on Remington UMC 230 grain FMJ lots from time to time also. I think you'd be happy with the Colt. My new Colt, model 01091 in stainless is a dream to shoot. It is the Model 1991, still a 1911 to me. With my eyes closed and not pulling the trigger, I can't tell that it's not the Gold Cup in my hand. And, that is the last one of my guns that I shoot to round out my range sessions... every time!

Can you post a link to hickok45's R51 review? I'm a youtube follower of his but never found it. About 2 months ago I asked him if he would be doing a review of the gun and he said "Remington wouldn't want me doing a review of the R51" or something along those lines. Thanks.

I've got both an R1 and an R51 (well, really Remington has the R51) and I love the R1, that's why I bought the damn R51. The R1 has been flawless, about 2500 rounds by now and no hiccups, nice trigger, good sights and as accurate as any gun can be with me shooting it. It was a good purchase and I would buy it again today.
