What choke is best for 00 buck out of a Rem 870 supermag? I have gotten anwsers from all over the board. A lot of guys swear on full and others say never use a full. So now im asking you guys. What is the best choke?

There is certainly a lot of opinions out there with what choke is best for 00 buck on a Remington 870 but I am of the camp to use a full or extra full choke. My opinions come from testing with the following set of chokes on my collection of Mossberg shotguns.

Trulock Chokes: Tactical, Skeet 1, Skeet 2, Improved Modified and Extra Full

I got the extra full. Now i cant wait to go out and pattern the gun. I had this one guy tell me that the barrel could bulge and cause injury but i dont think he knows what he is talking about. I hope it gives me tighter patterns

I shot the gun today and it seemed that it was shooting high and just a little to the right. I have the 870 supermag. Now one guy told me they are factory set around 50 yards and thats why im shooting high. Is this true?

I was researching this topic fairly recently and folks are certainly all over the board with it. About the use of tight chokes with 00, what I eventually deduced is that you have to be more careful about ammo selection to avoid a barrel bulge. Lead shot seems to be OK, but lead alternatives might not be as safe to use. They tend to be harder than lead & might not deform in the barrel if the shot begins to bind when going through the choke.

Barrel fatigue was another concern area with hard large shot. It might shoot fine for 99 rounds and the barrel then fails on the 100th shot. No good outcome there & you might not get any warning of an impending failure.

Another big lesson I got from my research as to which choke is best for 00 is that you have to pattern the choke with that particular brand hull - no different than BB shot. Patterns can get worse if the shot deforms when going down the barrel, as the non-round shape it forms can alter its ballistics once traveling through the air. I have an older 870 with two fixed choke barrels (full & improved). It will be interesting to see how either patterns when I get a chance to run some 00 through it.

We commonly use a full choked .410 with 00 buck...

I have a 20 inch barrel with chokes on my 870 Supermag, I get 12-14 inch patterns at 50 yds with 0 buck (SSG). I have a full choke that can shoot lead or steel, this years deer fell to one shot of 0 buck at 20 yds. Impressive and messy, not much on the ribs anyways.

I like the turkey choke on my 1100.. I've since re-barreled the 870 and moved the turkey choke to it, but haven't had time to shoot it yet. Cheers.. Ron

I don't know if it's been mentioned,but you may want to try a patternmaster choke.They don't actually constrict the shot charge.Go to their website and check them out.I use several in different guns specifically with buckshot.Federal premium 3" 00 and I have had friends of mine use my gun and swear it shoots like a rifle.

No I don't work for patternmaster or federal.I'm just a hunter who has spent considerable time and(his own) money trying various load/choke combinations.
