Decided on Rem 700 in .308 a my next purchase. Going to look around town for a used one. Wondering if I should get one a little older due to quality issues I've read about with the new ones.
Also, I'm planning on going with detachable magazine mod, so need advice on best/easiest model to get, and about what the price should be. I can buy new at Bass Pro for around $600, but want quality for less.
Any suggestions on what to look at to determine condition and price would be appreciated.

What do you plan on using your new r700 for? I picked up a new aac-sd and its been flawless thus far. If you let us know your goals with the rifle we can help you decide on which one you should get.

I want to try precision shooting from distance, and will be doing elk hunts this fall.

I am biased but I really like the new 700 AAC-SD with the 20" threaded barrel with 1/10 twist. Its compact, accurate and can be built to whatever configuration you would like. To be honst though any 700 you choose can be modified to fit your needs. That is the beauty of the 700. How much can you get the used one for?

The one at Bass Pro is gone of course. As is the used one I was looking at. Should have jumped, can't locate one locally. May have to go with the Ruger instead. ![]() Read good things on it but not able to mod like the 700. Rootbrain |

Found a 308 ADL today, under $400 new. The adl to bdl mod will add to it.
Going to hold off, but will probably go with it. I can see this being difficult to load, especially with gloves. Don't really mind using the bolt to unload so we'll see. This is heavy barrel, and they called it right. Over 8 lbs and pretty much that is the barrel. Will definitely be looking for a bipod for this. But first, have to replace the cheap scope and rings that came with it. Probably will also replace the rails from these aluminum to some steel ones. It never ends......lol Rootbrain |

WOW! Found .308 at Cabelas online, in stock. On sale $24.95 per box of 20, 180gr Fusion. Not cheap, but cheaper than anywhere else I've found them. And can't usually find them locally.
Need to get zeroed so bought 4. Rootbrain |

If you want to do upgrades, the options for a rem are endless . Not so much with a ruger. You did well

Just wondering about the adl to bdl conversion. Is this something an average Joe like me can do with common tools? I understand the trigger has something to do with releasing the magazine. I just think loading is going to be difficult with the adl, especially with gloves. Not looking forward to the extra $$ though. Rootbrain |

More .308 found locally today. Small gun shop off South Broadway in Denver. $22 per 20 round box.
Things are coming back. Rootbrain |

I have done 2 of the ADL to BDL conversions and they were as easy as swapping parts, because they are the factory parts. I got mine from Brownell's and swapped out stocks at the same time to Hogues. Takes 15 minutes.

Finally starting to find ammo at reasonable prices. Cabelas has .308 for $18 per 20 box for Herters 180gr.
Not great, but not bad. Rootbrain |

1st shoot with this today, finally got a couple hundred rounds together.. The scope is so far off I couldn't hit a barn with it in 10 shots at 100 yards! My Marlin 30-30 with irons standing unsupported I was 7 of 10 in circle, 8 on paper (couple of 10s, couple of flyers)
Thought I could do it at 100 without being on paper first. Boy was I wrong! Should have bore sighted, was too anxious and wasted 10 rounds. Also noted this can be finicky to load, especially with my arthritis. But so is my Marlin lever. Rootbrain |

I did thst a few times...LoL. I have 3 marlins, two are 30-30 and a 1951 waffle top in 35 rem, and those are the one I still prefer to shoot, something magic about them... Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2 |

Yeah, the bolts ad ar's are good guns, but something about a lever action appeals to my wild west side I guess. Like I'm standing next to the Duke fighting off indians (Native Americans) to save Maureen O'Hare... LOL. Hope I never grow up. |

OK just ordered this Boyds stock: The start of my ADL to BDL magazine upgrade. Not bad at $99. Also ordered the Wyatt's outdoor kit and two 10 round mags from Midway: http://www.midwayusa.com/product/350100 ... roductLink |

That turned out great.
I've used Boyds stocks on a couple of 10/22 builds, they do make a beautiful stock. We must reject the idea that every time a law's broken, society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker. It is time to restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his actions.-Ronald Reagan

And it was pretty much a drop in assembly. The barrel is free floated in the stock. I can run a business card between the barrel and stock all the way to the receiver. It gets a bit tight on the right so I'll do some minor sanding when I get the chance. Also think I'll do a coat of satin clear over this.
