Also my first gun, was a Model 581 22 rifle purchased new in 1968 for $49.95. I don't even know how many rounds I fired through that rifle. It was stolen in 1985. So far 4 of the stolen guns have been recovered including one 17 years after the burglary but as yet no sign of my little 581.

A few years later I saw a 581 for sale in a shop. It had been the personal rifle of a gunsmith who had extensively modified the rifle. The barrel was cut to 20" and the action was bedded with the barrel free-floated. He drilled and tapped it for an additional action screw and drilled holes in the stock's barrel channel that he filled with lead weights to restore the original balance after cutting the barrel. The bolt was lapped and he did a trigger job on it.

I've had this one for over 20 years, now. It's not the same as having the original, of course, but this one has character.
