I have 70 boxes of shotshells 45 years old, all boxes are full 25 per box, shells and boxes are in mint condition.
30 - Boxes of 12 Gauge Remington Express Plastic 2 3/4" Chamber 3 3/4 Drams Powder 1 1/4 Ounces Shot # 6 Shot.
30 - Boxes of 12 Gauge Winchester Super Speed Mark 5 Plastic 2 3/4" Chamber 3 3/4 Drams Powder 1 1/4 Ounces Shot # 7 1/2 Shot.
10 - Boxes of 410 Gauge Western Super X Paper 3" Chamber # 6 Shot.
I bought these shells from a gun store in New York City 45 years ago going out of business.
All the shells are high brass and have been stored in a cool dry place for the last 45 years.
There is no discolor or oxidation or any signs of the shells going bad, they look brand new.
I have been buying ammo alot over the past 45 years and shooting it up and had these locked up in a cabinet and never got to them.
Since I retired I was getting rid of stuff in the basement and came across them.
I decided to start shooting them up.
I took one box of the 12 gauge Remingtons and one box of the 12 gauge Winchesters upstate NY to my friends proprty.
I shot them out of my Over & Under and Side x Side, did not want the hassle of a misfire in my semi autos or pumps.
All fired with no problem, but they really stunk when I ejected them out of the guns, plus I found the guns alot more dirty when I cleaned them.
Does any one know the reason why they smell so bad after they are fired.

I would imagine that in that 45 years, the powders that Remington and Winchester use in the making of their shells has changed significantly...hence the unfamiliar odor.

Also, the powders today are more clean burning, hence the fouling from the older shells.

I don't know if you have ever used WOLF ammo...from Tula Arsenal in Russia...that ammo has a peculiar ammonia smell after firing ( but not before ).

I'm in Shooters camp, I had the same thought.

The powders have changed enough I think, that what was once a familiar smell, isnt anymore. New ammo burns differently, and just as Shooter said, its cleaner.

So now that youre accustomed to the smell of modern ammo, the older stuff smells weird? Just guessin though.

If I were you, and I was sitting on so much nicely preserved ammo, and it apparently shoots just fine.... but it smells a little funny? Ammonia smell is fairly common with old/obsolete centerfire ammo.

I'd consider myself extremely fortunate to have a stash of this stuff, and judiciously shoot up MOST of that ammo with friends and new shooters but certainly keep about ten boxes back just for nostalgia sake.

Ammo that is 45 years old may have some collector value..Before shooting any more I would take a look at some of the ammo collectors web sites..You may be shooting up a lot of money. This is especially true if you have the original boxes and the ammo is in pristine shape. You may have THE one box that someone needs to complete their display and could be worth big bucks. This is first post and hope to learn more from other Remington owners..Dave Deo Vindice :D How do I get the icon and not the type. Tried click and drag..it did not work.
