A little more than a year ago, a friend mentioned I should look into getting a hobby, and he had no problem recommending shooting. I am no stranger to firearms, shooting skeet at a friend's cabin in Michigan, and later as my father became involved with IDPA. I thought it was worth looking into.

I like to do my homework, and have spent the last 9 months weighing my options. Since moving to Canada, things are a little different, and I had to consider that as well. I also wanted to give my children the option to be involved. I am a fan of responsibility and safety, so I spoke with a few people regarding best practices with a firearm in the house.

I then needed to decide where to start. The upstart on this hobby is not cheap, so I have been saving my pennies as well. I went back and forth, do I start with a hand gun, a rifle, or a shotgun... I should also add, I have never hunted, and that is not appealing to me. I have nothing against hunting, just not for me. I plan to spend time at the range, and poke a lot of holes in paper. I also like to tinker, and I must admit, a gun that works well is equally as important as a gun that looks good (to me), that's just how I am.

A couple months ago, I fell in love with the Remngton 700. After some research, I found there were so many options to choose from as I was selecting a model. Add to that all of the required accessories, and the "optional" accessories - whew! Don't get me wrong, I am planning to have lasers and disco balls hanging off of their thing, just a serious looking rifle.

So my list is put together, and I have landed on a budget that I am comfortable with. I also understand this is a platform that is easily built on down the road. I have just registered for my Canadian Firearms Safety Course. Take that next week, and the wait will give me some time to save up a little more.

I have always enjoyed participating in forums. I spent nearly two decades in the custom car industry, and lately have found other hobbies with tremendous support through online forums. Thanks in advance for putting up with my sarcasm (please feel free to reciprocate), and for answering questions along the way.

Hello from Alabama.

You've made a very well-guided decision to go with a Rem 700 as it is such a versatile and accurate rifle with which to shoot and enjoy.

Raising you family to be familiar with and proficient around firearms is a favor you give which will become appreciated down the road.

Welcome to Remington Owners! The 700 is a great rifle, I'm planning on picking one up soon as well. What caliber did you get it in?
