I'd like to shorten the stock on my 870 Express Super Magnums black plastic stock. Maybe as much as an inch off the rear. Has anyone alter their plastic stocks. I don't want to cut into a hollow spot and ruin it.

It is possible to cut and shorten the syn stock. But you will have to epoxy some plactic inserts back into the stock to reinstall the recoil pad. You are better off buying a shorter butt stock quick and simple.
If you can't sell it don't buy it

+1 to buying a new stock with a shorter length of pull.

I'd rather alter/cut myself if possible so I can find tune the Length of Pull and the angle of the butt pad. If there is a void in the stock how far from the butt is it? In other words how much can I cut before I hit air?

Not sure how far you can go. Have you taken your butt pad off yet to look? Put some gun oil on the end of a phillips screw driver it helps.

No, I haven't taken anything apart yet, but it just feels and sounds like the stock is hollow inside. I wanted to research it some online before I attempted to change anything. This is my first plastic stocked long gun and not my favorite shotgun that I own (yet), but I would like it to make it more comfortable to shoot and mount. I got it mainly because it can shoot the 3 ½” shells that nothing else I own can do. I figured I could turn it into my favorite Turkey gun, Duck or slug gun, but it would be nice to be able to shoot clays, doves or small game with also if I can fine tune to stock dimensions to my liking.

Here is what the inside of the stock looks like. I think you could cut it down a few inches if you want. The only thing that you might have trouble with is mounting the rubber pad back on so that it is flush. Hopefully this helps you a little, if you need me to take any better pics feel free to ask.
(sorry for the bad cell phone pic)

Thanks. As always, a picture is worth a thousand words. Looks like there is room in there to store a lot of extra stuff for an emergency!
