Hello,

I live in Long Island, NY.

I've been hunting for years (rifle & bow) and am new here. Although I own an 870 shotgun I ave never owned a Remington Rifle. I just won a raffle through my hunting club for a Remington model 700SPS in .308 caliber.

I have used Nikon optics on other rifles and am leaning towards a Nikon scope for this new rifle. I wanted to use a DNZ base. I checked their website and they have different variation on their "game reaper" product line for the Remington 700. They list "short action", "long action", low mount, and higher mount versions.

Do any of you folks know which is the best one for this rifle?

Thanks

You are probably going to want the mount for a short action. Which height will be determined by the scope you want to run. I would say that if your scope has an objective lens diameter of 40 mm or smaller, you could get away with low. 50mm or more, probably high.

I would definitely get ahold of DNZ and ask them which size to get.

That being said, I sure like my Talley Lightweights and Leupold Dual Dovetails, but lately I've really fallen hard for S&K scope mounts. I think that as I upgrade scopes on some of my older rifles, I will be replacing the old mounts with S&Ks. For tactical style (and this is way out of my area of knowledge) I am starting to like the Seekins products. I just ordered some 30mm Picatinny rings for my M70 Coyote, so we'll see how they work on that gun.

Congrats on your win! Bad. has some excellent suggestions for making sure the scope you choose clears your barrel. Here's a pic of a Tikka T3 in .308 that my son used to harvest his first buck yesterday. I had planned on him using the Rem. 700 SPS I ordered but it hasn't arrived yet. I put a Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14 BDC on this Tikka and the results speak for themselves. Needless to say he is now eaten up with hunting fever.

I have heard good things about the game reaper. You will need one for a short action. The objective lens on your scope will determine height
