Hi all,
I'm new on this forum; sorry for my English as I'm French; nobody's perfect!
I just got this carbine from my father in law and I would like to get information about it.
Serial number is RW 173705.
What is the date of manufacturing and what model as i heard there are different models!
I've been told this one was used in England because of BV and BP on the barrel.
Is .610'' the chamber length?
Is it a common carbine?

Thanks for any help

The Model 12 was Remington’s first successful pump-action .22 rifle. It featured a compact receiver and a tubular magazine. It was chambered for the .22 short / long / long rifle.

As was the company’s usual practice, Remington offered the Model 12 in several grades: 12A (Basic Model), 12B (Gallery Model .22 Short only), 12C (Target Model and NRA Target Grade), 12D (Peerless), 12E (Expert), and 12F (Premier). The Model 12A came with a round barrel, whereas all the rest were fitted with octagonal barrels.

There were also the Models 12 CS/DS/ES/FS, all chambered for the .22 Remington Special cartridge. For all practical purposes, the .22 Remington Special was dimensionally and ballistically identical to the better-known .22 Winchester Rim Fire (WRF) cartridge, but Remington produced the cartridge under that designation as it did not want to mark its competitor’s initials on its rifles. Unlike earlier .22 ammunition, the .22 WRF/Remington Special was loaded exclusively with smokeless propellant in an attempt to dissuade the use of blackpowder ammunition in the new repeating rifles.

The Model 12 D, E, and F were deluxe variants. As the grade increased, the quality of the wood used on the rifles improved, and they could be ordered with any number of custom embellishments, including but not limited to special sights, engraving, and silver and/or gold inlays.

I also recently acquired A model 12 breakdown and called Remington to pin point the manufacturers date and with the serial number they told me it was made in 1917 WOW a gun that is almost 100 years old and still functions great. It does not have any bluing left. and its starting to get that brown patina on it in the spots where some had not cleaned it but its now mine all mine. :D :o OH HAPPY DAY

I will do my best to pass it down the family line when and if I decide to give up plinking. I cant believe how tight everything is after 97 years. Great little rifle.

Can anyone tell me if the model 12 came out with a tang site or was that an add on.

1928 so it will be date code stamped.

Remington started date code stamping in 1921.

Not all Model 12A Remingtons came with a round barrel. I have a Model 12A with octagon barrel that has never been modified.

I recently purchased a Remington model 12 from a local pawn shop. It has a round barrel, straight grip, and a flat buttplate. Wanted something to just plink with that reminded me of the "gallery guns" I used to shoot at the fair when I was a kid. I painted the front sight bead white so these old failing eyes can see it. When I started looking for the barrel code to see when it was made, I found a rather unique stamping. There's a letter "P" on top, very close to the barrel. Then about 1/4 inch below that letter is a stamped horizontal line. Just below the horizontal line is the letter "L" stamped at an angle with the vertical line of the "L" leaning about 15 degrees to the left. Guess the factory gunsmith didn't have his cup of coffee yet when he did these stampings. I'm assuming this represents Feb 1923 as the manufacture date. Someone did a very professional job of installing another brand of buttplate on this gun. It is perfectly fit and smoothed along the edges at an angle. It has "Ithaca Gun Co" stamped on the bottom of the buttplate. I ordered a reproduction Remington model 12 buttplate for replacement. Although not in the best of condition, it's a really good shooter on my 25 yd range, hitting everything I aim at.

I think this is a stock for a model 12. I found it in dads gun cabinet after he passed. I have asked several different forums and get a different answer each time. I would appreciate any input.
