Yes, the 17's are discontinued but there are used ones out there, and the 22 mags are selling for 1.5 to 2 times msrp. Lookon Gunbroker.com and others.

I was lucky enough to get a Model 597 in .22 Mag in 2008. It was mfg. in 2000, but it was in great condition. Unfortunately, it was discontinued shortly thereafter because I was having probs with FTF and FTE. I read that it was because of the magazines. Remington had two upgrades from the original. I had all three and still had probs that is, until a friend suggested I change out the extractor.

So, I got a Volquartsen Extractor and now it works great!

I just did that mod to my 597M and need to get to the range. After wrestling with the recoil spring re-installation....sheesh!

Glad to hear the new extractor solved the problem. I know the Ruger 96/22 magnum had some problems too and read the magnum round was a challenge in semi-autos. Savage has the A-22 magnum semi now which according to Savage solves the problem with feeding and extraction. I sure like the looks of the Remington 597 over the Savage though. What are you guys using for ammo by the way? My bolt 22 mags shoot great groups with the CCI 40 gr. H.P.

I haven't shot mine enough to know if it likes one brand before another, but mainly I shoot the Federal blue box fodder because it is cheapest of the 22 WMR's available locally. I do want to try my 597 with some CCI 22 WRF also, just to see how accurate that is and if it cycles okay.

Hmm Federal Blue Box stuff. Gotta look for that if it is cheaper but hate to stray from a sure thing. Have noticed a difference in groups shifting a bit but still tight with solid FMJ CCi same weight 40 grain. Usually buy the H.P CCI for varmints. Actually the Remington 22 magnum at 1910 F.P.S. shoots quite close to the CCI in my guns. Mostly woods varmint hunting for me so I sight in for 50-60 yard shots. Thanks for the input.

It's FMJ 40-gr but it's a couple bucks cheaper than HP hunting rounds.....

We're all here to help. And it's getting spring-itchy-time to get out and shoot.
