The stock on my son's 870 Express has taken a beating over the years. We have decided to refinish it. I have researched various websites and: stripped off the old finish with Citristrip, soaked it for days in an acetone bath followed by an alcohol bath, used a heat gun to raise oil spots and tried a calcium carbonate and acetone slurry to draw out oil spots.

It looks OK though there is still a darkness at the butt and around where the receiver attaches. I am moving on to staining and I need advice on how best to stain birch.

I have visited a local woodworkers shop for advice. A received a variety of opinions on using oil stains, dyes, conditioners, sealants . . . and no clear direction. Web research has not provided a clear path, just conflicting ideas. I know that birch will absorb stains unevenly so some sort of sealant/conditioner is needed.

What I need is the voice of experience. Has anyone successfully reconditioned a birch stock, and if so, how?

Thanks,

Bigfoot
