I was about to buy a new 870 Express at Academy Sports ($279) when I decided to check used guns at local pawn shops. I found a Wingmaster with a fixed choke vent rib barrel which would rate at about 90% or better. The serial number has no prefix, so I assume it is pre 1968. Out the door price is $300. I've not price an 870 in ages. Is this deal good, bad, average? What are used 870s going for these days?

Thanks!

Sounds about right for around here; would have been a little less in Louisiana. Region does affect pricing. No prefix is pre 1968.
What could have happened... did.

I sure would grab a used Wingmaster anyday over that Express. For $300 in the condition you describe it sounds like a very good price. Price of a new Wingmaster is just lets say quite expensive.

I bought this shotgun. After wiping it down, I'd rate it at 95% or better. $300 including tax. Barrel code (A L &) indicates March 1964 birth month. Any idea what the "&" sign means? Maybe I can get some good pics this weekend and post them.

Thanks

Good for you!! I meant to say I think you stole it for $300!! Good ole steel receiver, walnut, and polished bluing. My dream is to locate a LT 1100 in 20 gauge.

I'd say $300 was a good price if the gun is in proper mechanical shape and has what you need for the intended application (chamber length, choke, flex-tab action if it'll pull HD duty, etc).
