Just read in my July issue of Shooting Times Remington was dropping the 597 in 22 mag. from production. Hopefully available from distributors for a while. Gettin a semi in 22 mag. can be tough.

Been having fairly good luck at Bass pro shop usually and a couple of the smaller gun shops near me. My 925M and the new Ruger like the CCIs 40 grain stuff. Been paying between $12 and $15 usually.

Oddly, finding 22 WMR and 17 HMR ammo is easy compared to (still) finding 22LR. I'd glad I have my 597 in 22 WMR. I have lots of other rifles to use in 22 LR.

I was having probs with my 597, .22 Mag and everywhere I read said it was the magazines. I had all three versions of the magazines and they all had probs. I took apart the mags and cleaned them to no avail. Finally a friend on another board gave me a great suggestion.

Change out the extractor for a Volquartsen. I did and now it works great.

If only Remington had thought to do this!

I changed out the extractor on my little Walther P22. It would extract shot cases just fine, but would not pull out an unfired case from the chamber to save your life. No amount of coaxing or cussing would extract a live round.

After I changed the extractor, all was right afterwards.

In fairness, that gun had taught 3 sons how to shoot a semiauto pistol and had lobbed a lead mine out of it over the 15 years or more that I've owned it. But that had been an issue with it since day one.

I just put a Volquartson extractor in my 597M but have not had it to the range yet. 22WMR is plentiful again and I've been stocking up to use with this rifle.

Glad to see that more peeps are changing out the extractor on their firearms to improve it. If I had only known earlier, I wouldn't have had gone to the trouble of messin' with all those magazines.
Despite the cheap cost of .22 LR, I got bored early with shooting that caliber, but when I stepped up to a .22 Mag, it made a difference in that it felt a little more powerful and I would take my time in firing off a round to get a good hit.
I got my .597 .22 Mag used, but it was in great condition and slightly less then MSRP. I take it out more often now that I have changed the extractor. Lots of fun!
Good shootin' to y'all.

I agree, lots of fun with the 597M. A shame that business decisions affect the availability of great guns like this.
