Does anyone know why Remington made the 10 round replacement magazine so poorly and do you know of an alternative manufacturer of a similar magazine. Does the 77 magazine work any better at keeping the round from popping out?

Same rifle here. Haven't found any alternatives. I just buy a new mag every 3 - 5 years, whether I need it or not. Same rifle for 46 years. I put a scope on it 20 years ago, a cheap Tasco, and upgraded that to a Simmons last year.

Because that is why I like tube magazines better! 582 Rules!!! From what I know, Remington used that same magazine on many different rifles. Take care of them and love and coddle the ones that work right.

Remington 541 (and probably 581) came with a 5 round plastic mag. It worked fine. Remington stopped selling those and switched to a 10-round plastic mag. These do not work as well.
They are prone to splitting and other problems. My original 5-round mag lasted over 20 years. I have yet to have a 10-round last 2-years and most do not last 6-months with heavy usage. I just replaced another that will not stay in the gun and when it hits the ground ejects every round in it. I even go so far as to never load over 5-rounds in the mag. I really joined this forum to see if anyone knew of a source for a metal magazine. Doesn't appear so since a search of the Forum doesn't turn up any discussion on a 541. Sheep
