Whats up guys? New to the site and have a quick question. I have a new R1 enhanced that I only have put about 60 rounds through, When I got home I tried to fieldstrip for cleaning, problem is I could not get the slide stop take down lever to pull out so I could not disengage the slide. I really dont want to send it back to the factory for something so stupid. If anyone has an idea on how to get it out or has had a similar problem please let me know. Thanx in advance for any help you can give!

Have you used a 1911 before? The slide isnt locked back is it? There is another notch for the slide stop for take down.

I watched the youtube video while I was stripping it down and the take down pin would not come out, I figured someone might have a little trick to loosen it up. Its a new gun and I didnt want to start trying to pry things apart and scratch up my gun!

If you have the slide at the proper alignment mark, most new guns need a good solid hit or two with the butt end of a plastic screwdriver handle from the right side to start it. Once the protrusion on the right is flush with the frame it becomes easy to pull out from the left side. My advice is that you should NEVER EVER try to pry the slide stop up on the left side.
It gets easier after the slide stop has been removed many times. Until then the plastic screwdriver handle will not mar the finish so whack away!

Sound advice, Nitesite. Thanx! I field stripped and cleaned my new R1 Commander using this trick. Hopefully it'll be a bit less sticky after a few hundred rounds downrange. -Ed-

Hi again, Gang. I cleaned up my new R1 Commander this past Tuesday after the initial baptism by fire at the range. After 170 rounds the take down lever was MUCH easier to remove than when it first came out of the box. I didn't need the plastic-butt screwdriver. This is one tight pistol, guys. No rattles and the parts move easily and smoothly. Nice, crisp trigger pull. I love her!
