I did a check on the barrel code and its DA 41. So that is D september if i have it correct. A is what throws me. This is an older rifle with high gloss finish and walnut. The letter A shows 1980 but the date of production shows 81 to 2005. The next A is 2003. Did Remington produce this type of rifle in 2003? I thought they went to a mat wood finish and plastic stocks.

OK so I called Remington and they said you can not go by the two letters on the barrel. That is only when the barrel was made not the whole gun. I gave him my serial no and it was dated to the next year 1981 so in the very first run of the rifle.
