How do you remove the slide back plate to take out the firing pin? There's a little play in the back plate but I don't want to force it in case there is a release somewhere.

Found, the answer. Exactly the same as Glock. At the front of the striker tab grove you will see a small ledge. I thought this part of the striker channel. Instead it was part of the striker guide. Push that little ledge to the front of the grove with a little screwdriver and the back plate will slide right off. No extractor plunger providing extra tension.
