Hi all! it's been a bit since I posted here, but I have a new video that I thought might interest some of you. Last weekend, I got out the camera, and recorded a comparison between my trusty 870P and the other heavyweight contender in the defensive slide-action shotgun genre, the Mossberg 590A1. To see how this all played out, checked out the video links below. Part-1 is my shop comparison between the two contenders, and part-2 is the live-fire evaluation on the range. I hope you all enjoy it!

I own both.

Of the two, it's still hard to beat an nice Winchester 1300 speedpump/ranger.

Ithaca mod 37 are still awesome too.

I don't really think you could go wrong with any of them.

I don't have any experience with the Winchester or the Ithica, but I know they both have good reputations.

I have never heard of a pump getting jammed up by dropping it.

Well I have never heard of a Winchester 1300 being touted as one of the best before, either. It did point very well for me I must admit. It succeeded the 1200, and it was then replaced by the Speed Pump, which itself has now been replaced by the SXP. Over the same time frome the Mossberg and Remington required no redesigns.
What could have happened... did.

What were the changes between the model names?

Just for reference, I've owned a couple model 1300's. The earliest was the basic model. The latter being a model 1300 speed pump.

The 1300 speed pump was the "pretty" version with nice wood furniture and speed pump engraved in the side. But other than cosmetics, I am unable to tell that there is a difference between either of the two.

Kind of like the Firebird and the Trans Am. Or the Camaro and Z28.

There have been internal and/or material changes with each model change. I don't remember all the details now.
I am a retired gunsmith and I can tell you the repair rates did go down with each change i witnessed. Way back there used to be a Winchester range, and a friend worked there, and one could rent a gun for like 25 cents a round. They would put broken 1200s and 1400s in a 55 gallon drum and when the drum would get full l they would ship them back to Winchester. Didn't take too long to fill a drum, either.
What could have happened... did.
