Hi guys, I'm an old timer in age, just new in this forum but not to guns. The reason for just joining today is what I think was a great buy I found today.
I was in a gun shop about 100 miles from home when I happened to see the profile of a 788 in the rack out in the public area of the shop. Next glance was at the muzzle where I noticed it was about .22 caliber and was hoping for a .222. Nope a June 1980 .223 in about 98 percent condition except for a couple of D&T scope mount holes on the barrel and a Weaver mount on the receiver. The tagged price was $150... I did not put it down and did not even try to argue the price down, I just bought it!
Now I am wondering how many .223's were made? The June 1980 is fairly late for 788 production I think and the series number is A300040XX. Blue Book doesn't show a premium for .223 cal but I suspect it is one of the lessor productions. Comments?

Sure did well for the price Trooperdan. My book says the 788 was made from 67-83. I would imagine the .223 was produced in lower numbers than the other caliber offerings. Is yours a 22 inch barrel? Have always heard that rear lock-up produced great accuracy. This is the model I believe Remington should have reproduced instead of the budget jobs like the 710 or 770 junkers. Think you are better off with the .223 chambering as plenty of ammo offerings these days.

Any way to determine the barrel twist rate?

Most of the load data in my old (1982) Lyman manual only had bullets listed between 35- 55 gr

Well, I checked out my new rifle more closely and I don't believe it has been fired! There isn't a scratch or dent anywhere on the stock and there is absolutely not a mark on the bolt face! It doesn't take many rounds to mark the bolt face and I seen no evidence at all of this one being fired! Well, that condition won't last long, as soon as I can load up some ammo we're going to the range!

Excellent find! I just sold off a 788 in .308 -- hated to but it was never getting shot and just gathering dust. Enjoy that .223!
