OK, I have not seen a subset for this subject, so where is the topic of the Nylon 22's gonna go? I know someone other than me has to have one or two lying around! I found an Apache black model at the gunshop the other day, and will be picking up soon, Now I have to find the Mohave brown, and the Green model...
any one know of a twelve step program for this problem I have?
I would rather die on my feet, than live on my knees...

trying to get differnt style rifles to play around with and was looking for a Remington lever action - and the Nylon came up in my google serach. Do you have any info/opinion on them?

Mike, You are seeking the Holy Grail of Nylons! There were not many made, and if they survived, are sitting in safes or closets and have yet to come out in public.
the Nylon series was a great series of rifles. Lightweight, accurate, and durable. Unless you did something really bad, the worst you could do would be scratch the synthetic stock. There was a lever model of the nylon, but in 45 years of shooting and horsin around guns, I do not recall ever seeing one. I have been to many gunshows, but never..... If you ever find one, you will be priviledged. Jim. I would rather die on my feet, than live on my knees...

wow, I did not know that. I was only searching for a level action Remington - which apparently they don't make anymore. I suspect if I did come across a Nylon - it'll exceed what I was looking to spend

There is no known cure for our problem!!!! I have shot one nylon lever and missed one at a gun sale it sold for 500.00
If you can't sell it don't buy it

I have had my Nylon66 since before I was born. Yep. Dad bought it 1962. Mom used it to scare off an intruder while pregnant with me. I first shot it at 8 yrs old. I had it completely refinished a few years back and it looks like new. I venture over 10,000 rounds easily have gone through it. It still shoots fantastic. My kids will be taking over custody in the next 20 years and keep on handing it down.
700 x 2 - .308 and .223 - original Nylon 66, and a 597

Hi guys and gals, I'm posting because I have a rifle I don't know much about and overall want to be safe while shooting. It is a Remington Nylon 10. It is a single shot bolt action but from my research I have not found any to have a stainless, or chrome barrel. I have shot 22 magnum but throug my research I see only 22lr. I have not had any issues with it just not sure if I need to start shooting 22lr instead. It was given to me from my father in law and he don't know much about it, he bought it in the early 80's.
The guns only markings on the barrel are P J 58 22. It has a 19" rifled barrel. I have only seen this gun with blued barrel. It is in working condition but not perfect. Any info, and value of this gun would be great thanks.

I have one, a plain ol' Nylon 66. I remember the ads Remington used to run about the trick shooter and the wood blocks, and was always fascinated by that. My first ever gun bought with my own money was a Remington 581, but the Nylon 66 was what captivated me back in those days circa 1974. I sold off the 581 to get money for an Ithaca Model 72 Saddlegun, and still own and shoot that one to this very day. But I also picked up a Nylon 66 years ago to round out my mis-gotten youth!

So shall it be said, so shall it be done.... She wears a Simmons 3-9x40 Deerfield scope taken off another rifle way back. High rise see-thru mounts for the large objective bell of the scope, but it gets soooooooooo much light into that lens.  Oh, and it's pretty deadly accurate out to 75 yards or so. I have a Nylon 66 Black Diamond that I bought sometime in the late 1970s - been so long I can't remember what year! This little rifle saw a lot of use over the years before being stored at my dad's house when I moved out of Texas. It sat in the safe for 10 years before I was able to go get it. Other than a few scratches it looks like new. These are some tough little rifles! It has a Bushnell 3-7x Custom 22 scope that has been on it since both were new. The scope hasn't weathered the years nearly as well as the rifle, that's for sure.

Took both rifles to the range a couple of days ago and had a blast despite a bitterly cold wind and no gloves. To my surprise the Nylon 66 was shooting much better than the Speedmaster, 1.5" at 50 yards with CCI SV or Mini-Mags. I need to go over the 552 to see what's up with it as I remember it being much more accurate.
There's something very cathartic about taking a rifle you haven't shot in many years to the range and reacquainting yourself. Sort of like meeting an old friend again after a long absence. |

I hear ya Tarasdad. Almost forgot about the Nylon series. Seems these guns we're ahead of themselves way back when. Use to seem em sellin cheap in the used gun racks at my LGS. Now seems like a collectors item. Hope the Speedmaster accuracy improves. That brought back memories of my buddys way back. They seemed pretty high end back in my early teenage years.

I picked up a Nylon 66 a few years ago because I always wanted on since I was a kid. Used to drool over them at the time, and loved that ad with the guy and stacks and stacks of wood blocks that he shot. A shame Remmie didn't make them more customizable like the 10/22's became, or they would have been the world-beater.

I recall that ad with the wooden boxes. I believe his name was Tom Frye and they would send you one of the wooden boxes for free way back then. Yes the Nylons seemed like a radical departure back then compared to the wooden stocks so popular.

Remington should make something similar again, because the 597's just aren't competing with the aftermarket accessory craze like the 10/22's do. Ruger owns that corner of market share. I love my 597M, but there's very little after-market-wise available. And I'm not into the "tactical everything". Fact is I can't think of much to post about my Nylon 66 because the durn thing just keeps on running and running and running .....

I have one of the Mohave Brown 66's and really enjoy it. I think the Brown ones were the most common.

Well, this area hasn't been visited for awhile - so I'll bring it back to the top!!
My first rifle was a Remington Nylon 66. I bought it in early 1960 at a military Rod & Gun Club in France (remember when military bases actually sold firearms??). I used it for crows, etc., while still in France; I carried it between the seats on my Volkswagen beetle so it was always available. I still have it and it comes out of the safe occasionally!! I do. The base Exchange at Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage still does. But there hasn't been a rifle that captivated so many young shooters like the Nylon-series except for the AR's now. Heck, you used to see Nylong 66 ads on tv, and those days won't even happen again. NRA Life, NAHC Life, Retired USN
