Finally made it to the range. At 100 yards this is what I ended up with. Shot 5 different kinds of ammo. Seems like I should be getting a little better groups with at least one kind. All 150 grain bullets. I have a Bushnell 3-9 Trophy scope on it. My first center fire rifle, not Sure what to do next to tighten up the group.

Got the same rifle and scope myself. Yep should be getting a lot better groups. Check the scope and mounts for any looseness. Start at 25 yards and see what happens. Mine groups very well with the cheaper Rem. Core-lokt 150 grain stuff.

Even my old surplus FAL shoots better than that. I agree, it should shoot tighter groups for sure.
Mauser9 gave solid advice to make sure everything is tight. I also don't want to insult you, but proper shooting technique also goes a long way for printing groups too. I don't want to assume anything. I'm not sure what the twist rate is on the barrel, but have you tried heavier/longer bullets in your rifle? It may prefer 168 grainers or something in that ballpark? When people ignorant of guns make gun laws, you end up with ignorant gun laws.

Nope never tried the 168 grain stuff but it could be good advice. I planned on using some of the premium brands of ammo to check grouping but most of my shots are well under 100 yards so far. Bought mine back in 84 new and of course has a 22 inch barrel. Bluing is like a mirror and overall the gun looks almost custom compared to many offerings today. Think I paid under $350. Good luck on those groups.

What was your shooting rest, just a sandbag with a floating buttstock? Or a good, solid fixed (i.e. repeatable) rest? Also, stick with 3-shot groups. We never shoot 5-shots at game and the barrel heats up with strings that quick. Then as stated try some heavier bullets. 150-gr is the "sweet spot" for .308's but yours may like 165-grainers. I appreciate all of your advice. I was thinking about getting Remington's 1 piece scope mounts. I was also planning on trying some heavier bullets.
I was shooting with just a front rest on that session. I'll remount the scope and check the action screws, before I go shooting again. Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk |
