Slide release tab under spring?

If, after reassembly, the gun passes the function test, does that mean the slide release tab is under that little spring? Or, should I rely on the grooved end of the slide release snapping back down when pushed up? Had to insert the slide release several times today before it would snap back when pushed up. Is there a better way? Thanks for any suggestions.

When the slide is locked back, i just look to see that the spring is not under the slide stop.

Thanks! Seems like this would be a good tip for Remington to put in the Owners Manual. Fig.41 is very unclear. Appreciate the help.
