I just bought a used 1100 classic trap. I got it for $300.00 and it looks to be in great condition. I called remington to see when it was made and it turns out it was made in 1976. You wouldn't know it by looking at it. I decided to put some shells in it and see how easily it would unload them. This is where I ran into a problem. I pulled the bolt back and the chambered she'll ejected but the next one did not load as the bolt locked open. I had to hit the silver button on the bottom to get it into the chamber. It does that every time. I have not tried shooting it yet and I took it to the LGS to see what they thought. They appeared just as perplexed as me and said that their gunsmith would fix it. I'm just hoping that it's not supposed to function that way and I'm not wasting $65.00. Any input?

That is exactly how it is supposed to work, when they are working correctly. If you are VERY quick sometimes you can get it to feed the next shell manually. I have been shooting them for 53 years and I can do it about 40% of the time. The shell coming out of the magazine trips the carrier latch so it should work fine with live ammo. If the "gunsmith" fixes it, you got screwed. Why didn't you just download and read the owner's manual? You can get it to cycle shells through by bending the carrier latch by pulling the trigger and letting the hammer fall with the trigger group out of the gun, and many are that way, and the owner's manual cautions you NOT to do that because often then the bolt will not lock back like it is supposed to at all.
Newer, as in the last couple of years, 1100s have a new style carrier with a finger that allows one to cycle shells through manually with just the bolt. Unnecessary change in my opinion.
You still need to download and read that owner's manual. Can save you some more grief and money. If you try to load it through the magazine with the hammer not cocked you are going to run into another problem. First shell is designed to be loaded thru the ejection port.

Thanks for the info. I'm not sure why I didn't read a manual. I normally do. I will call the LGS today and explain this to them.

Getting a classic trap for $300 seems quite remarkable to me. Love to see the wood. Not exactly giving the new 1100s away. Back in 80 I bought my TB grade which was considered kinda ho-hum back in those days at the trap range at my club where many were shooting Franchi with gold inlays. Now mine gets a admiring glances and good comments compared to all the tupperware being used.
