My Winchester lever action...

WINCHESTER 1894....30WCF...TOP EJECT....CIRCA 1977

The John Browning designed Winchester Model 1894 is perhaps the best known of the Winchester repeating rifles. The Model 94 was chambered for the newly introduced smokeless .30-30 Winchester cartridge, and later, a variety of calibers such as .25-35 WCF, .32-40 WCF, .32 Winchester Special, and the .38-55. Winchester was the first company to manufacture a civilian rifle chambered for the new smokeless propellants, and although delays prevented the .30-30 cartridge from appearing on the shelves until 1895, it remained the first commercially available smokeless powder round for the North American consumer market. Though initially it was too expensive for most shooters, the Model 1894 went on to become one of the best-selling hunting rifles of all timeā€”it has the distinction of being the first sporting/hunting rifle to sell over one million units, ultimately selling over seven million until US production was discontinued in 2006. A 2010 commemorative rifle has been produced to celebrate 200 years since Oliver F. Winchester's birth. The Winchester 94/.30-30 combination is practically synonymous with "deer rifle."

Here's one of my Pop's lever guns...

It was gifted to him by a ranch hand decades ago. There were several notches in the stock when it was given, but no questions were asked.

Every time I get a lever gun in hand, images of Jimmy Stewart ("Winchester 1876") and John Wayne (pick your favorite movie) run through my mind. As a 12-year-old or so, Dad gave brother and me matched Winnie 94s for Christmas; sadly they were sold off oh so many years ago. For Christmas '68, my brother was given an almost-matched pair of Winnies (Model 88 in .308 and Model 250 in .22LR). Both are in my custody at the moment. They join a heavy-barrel Henry (H0001T) and Win Model 9422M. All get regular exercise.

If I could figure out how to post pictures, I'd post my Winchester Model 92 .32-20 (grandpa's old rifle) and my pre-64 Winchester Model 88 .308 Win.

I have a Marlin 336 in 30/30 my father left me but I still want at least 1 Winchester lever action. I came close to buying a Winchester 1890 in 22 short but missed the deal because I wanted to research it....oh well!

Avid rifle shooters, for the most part, believe that a "bolt-action" rifle is the most accurate. I believe that to be a mostly true statement. However, there are exceptions like my Pre-64 Winchester Model 88 in .308 WIN. This model is a HYBRID, in that it is considered a "Lever Action Rifle" but, in actuality it is a lever operated bolt action. The bolt is a 3-Lug locking rotating bolt, fed vertically by the detachable box magazine and it is every bit as accurate as even the high end Weatherby Vanguard and Sako A-7 rifles that I compared my M88 with, along with a Jarrett modified 700, Winchester Model 70 Sporter, Springfield Model 1903, and a Thompson/Center Icon. My groups consistently were right in line with their groupings. That said, I don't need a "Bolt Action" rifle. The Sako Finnwolf and Browning BLR have similar actions but I don't think they were as popular as the M88.
