my model 572 pump slide action locking bar will not stay locked after moving the action forward. The locking bar keeps coming off of the seated position on the locking bar post and won't stay parallel to the side of the receiver. Can anyone help.

Was given a .22 Model 572 Pump two years ago for Christmas. Was in the closet until today, fired it for the first time and was disappointed. Regardless of who manufactured the ammo, only 1 or 2 rounds would fire out of every 20 I put in the gun. Other than misfiring almost 95% of the time , I like it.

Hello fellow 572 owners! I recognize a name or two here and didn't realize we had interests outside of some of our pistols! I was happy to see additional appreciation for other great things, lol!!

My question today is this, I have a 572 Fieldmaster that is in 90% condition except for one problem. When I load the magazine tube, regardless of quantity or size of round (S, L, LR) it will feed two or three rounds and will then fail to feed the next round. It will eject the fired round but the next round will retract so far into the receiver that the next round ahead of it will buckle under the spring pressure and I'll end up with two rounds jammed in a V like fashion in the chamber. I took the magazine tube spring out to check it for issues and didn't see any problems, so I put it back in as is. I wondered about reducing that spring tension but don't want to mess with it myself unless there is some kind of issue that can be described to me. I like to fix my own firearms but will take it to a Smith if the house feels that's the wisest choice. Thanks!! :)

I bought one from a friend and it is fun to shoot and quite accurate. It never missed a beat.

Never experienced this issue myself. I've noticed some ammo issues the last year with my 552s and 572s. Nothing earth-shattering, but enough to start me thinking about running some tests... or not... Been shooting whatever I could get my hands on, and some of it was pretty cheaply made.

I doubt this is a magazine spring issue. Trigger group is where I'd start.

Take a look at the the carrier and then the disconnector/sear relationship. Are they installed correctly and free to move? Too dirty?

Look for proper installation of the disconnector - the rear tang should be behind/beneath the sear; I've seen several issues in friends' guns when the disconnector and sear are reversed, although I cannot recall specifically what right now. (senior moment...) Inspect all the trigger group parts for flaring, abnormal wear, etc.

I'll take a look at the workshop manual tomorrow to see if anything there can shed some light on your problem.

From the Service Manual, a couple of troubleshooting sections that may be helpful:

Fails to Feed Back:
1. Magazine spring damaged - replace spring
2. Inner or Outer magazine tube damaged - adjust or replace as needed
3. Carrier adjusted high - adjust carrier lower or replace
4. Cartridge ways in receiver and Barrel rough - smooth up cartridge ways in Receiver and Barrel
5. Cartridge ramp damaged or missing - adjust or replace cartridge ramp

Fails to feed UP:
1. Carrier binds - Free up Carrier or replace
2. Carrier spring damaged or missing - Replace Carrier spring
3. Carrier feed low - Adjust Carrier for higher feed or replace
4. Breech cuts in Barrel damaged - Smooth up Breech cuts or replace barrel
5. Carrier position faulty - Adjust Carrier to locate it diagonally in Bolt slot

Hope this is helpful.

I have a 572 that occasionally locks up after firing. It appears the locking arm does not want to release. Sometimes if I push forward hard on the forend, and then pull back it releases then. When it doesn't, I drive out the two pins holding in the trigger group, it then comes free instantly. I suspect it might be an issue of too little headspace, keeping tension on the locking arm. Any ideas or opinions on this?

I seriously doubt that headspace is the issue, since these had pretty loose chambers able to accommodate Shorts, Longs and Long Rifle cartridges even mixed together intermingled. When was the last time the gun was cleaned thoroughly? Do you use fairly dirty ammo like Blazer?

It was cleaned thoroughly at the first sign of trouble, with a total disassembly. I tried several different types of ammo.
