So I bought my first rifle ever October 2017. Been sitting in the closet for a year before I finally decided to give it a go. Went to Walmart, picked up 2 boxes of Winchester 150 grain ammo and headed to the range. I was super excited just like I always am when shooting a new gun for the first time. And honestly a little nervous because this would also be the first time ever shooting a bolt action rifle. I know kinda weird with my history. Marine Corps for almost 10 years. Thousands of rounds with M16s, M4s, Berettas and Glocks, but hey, just never got around to the bolt guns.

Anyways, I mounted an SWFA 10 power optic, built a makeshift cheek piece from some iso mat and shot the first round at 25 meets. Hit paper about 5 mils high and 2 mils left. When I tried to operate the bolt it seemed to stick a little and then the bolt finally came back and ejected the spent case. Confident in my marksmanship I conservatively adjusted my scope 4 mils down and 1 mil right. Shot 2. 1 mil high and 1 mil left. Tried to operate the bolt again and this time it took a good 3 minutes to finally get the bolt back and eject the round.

Now I'm starting to get worried so I unload the last round, remove the bolt and inspect. Nothing I would deem unusual. I inspect the spent cases and compare them to the new rounds and nothing unusual. No signs of over pressure. Check the chamber the best I can and nothing unusual. So I load another round, adjust 1 mil down and 1 mil right and take another shot. Right on target, but this time I can't get the bolt back at all. Of course with my luck, the range goes on a cease fire so I have to tell the RSO I can't unload and show clear. We put a piece of wood on the bolt handle and tap it with a hammer and it releases.

The RSO looks everything over, inspecting making sure my ammo isn't handloaded and overpressure. He makes the range hot again and tells me to chamber a round and we'll see what happens. Well, of course the round is on target again but the bolt is stuck again. We beat it back again, try cleaning anything out of the chamber, observe nothing indicating overpressure and shoot again. We decided to try my other box of ammo and the first round extracts and ejects perfectly. Good, it's a bad batch of ammo. We try one more to make sure and again, the bolts stuck. Not the ammo. So at 8 rounds we call it a day.

I take my now useless rifle to the custom gunsmith down the road. He inspects the ammo, bolt and chamber, takes it in the back and takes some measurements and said the cam tolerances are wrong. He said he could fix it but he recommends sending it to Remington because I shouldn't have to pay for that.

Anyways, has anyone dealt with this problem before. I tried to do my research before buying this rifle. I decided on Remington because it's super common to use 700 actions to build custom guns and it gives me the option to upgrade everything around my action to have my very own personalised gun. From everything I read they seemed extremely reliable and I had such high expectations but now I'm extremely disappointed. I hope Remington would take care of this issue, but now I'm afraid I'll get back a gun that's been machined to hell with an action that's been weakened in the process.

No, I've never even heard of that happening before, especially with a new gun. I'd also recommend sending it to Remington to fix it. And with the looming bankruptcy proceedings, sooner rather than later.

I'm sorry that you have to deal with that, but Remington needs to lick their calf.

Considering the number of 700 rifles out there, this has to be a ~one-off quality control issue. Never heard of that bolt-sticking problem in a 700 myself, either.

Thanks. They sent me a FedEx label and I sent it to them about a week ago. They verified they got it, but no word yet on their solution.
