I have a question and it's only a question because I don't have the intention to build one. If you buy a 700 long action receiver (no bolt), a PTG long action one piece bolt with a Lapua bolt face (.590) and a 338 Lapua barrel you can built one? All you need is the stock, magazine, trigger group and trigger guard? The "standard" long action receiver is the one used by Remington to build there 338 Lapua?

Curious to know the answer to this as well. Sounds interesting.

I too want to know. I can answer part of the question, the stock remington 700 long action is dimensionally the same as the 700P 338 LM. I thought the lower port for magazine feed might be longer in the LM but it isn't. I just measured them both.

I have a 338 LM and have plans to put a target barrel on it, even though it only has 60 rounds through it and shoots pretty well. Looking for a longer barrel and long distance accuracy.

So I ran across a good deal on a 338 LM PTG bolt and picked it up. Slipped it into an action I had on hand that was originally from a 30-06 and it fit fine and is timed perfectly.

I don't really have plans for this action right now so I'm thinking I'll build on it and keep the original 338 LM original.

So the real question would be the heat treat. I'm almost certain there is nothing special. The serial number on the 700P looks like a standard G series. But i'd really like to find someone who knows.

Now the bolt on the 700P might have a different heat treat. The lip is thin in a .698 bolt so it wouldn't surprise me if there is some metallurgical difference in the bolt.

I've got 2 or 3 rifles in line to build before this one so I'll wait patiently for a while.

Found this thread on Long Range Hunting. One gunsmith, Kirby Allen, seems to have a lot of experience and some data. I do not know him so I am not endorsing his work, nor am I doubting it or casting it in any negative light.

I heard back from Remington via email. Remington confirms that there is no significant difference between the 30-06 action and the 338 LM action. The minor difference is that the 338 action has 8-40 scope mounting screws. --Jerry
