Can someone advise on the feasibility of rebarreling a 700 at home? Is it a gunsmith job or can someone with mechanical skills tackle this?

I ask because we have a 700 ADL in 223 that might have some throat erosion issues from hi round count and heat. Can the original barrel be re throated?

Basically, yes. There are some special tools needed, an action wrench and barrel vise (don't try a pipe wrench, please!), various go-no-go gauges in your caliber, and a short-chambered-pre-threaded barrel along with a finish reamer in your caliber. There are lots of references for this job, and the 700 action is simple and doers not require any extractor cuts or special slotting. LOTS of info available on the web and places like MidwayUSA and Brownells.

I thought you also needed a lathe to make sure the barrel shank was also the proper length from where the barrel meets the recoil lug to the bolt face. Then the chamber was reamed to depth. I thought it could possibly be done without a lathe if one had precise shims or could mill the recoil lug to the proper thickness.

You can always do the Remage option. It uses a barrel nut like the Savage. Have to pick a cartridge with the same size bolt head or change the bolt since you'll have to set the headspace anyway.
