Does'nt look like to many people on this forum but here it goes. Bought this r1 high polish to shoot i dont do safe queens. I have attempted to shoot it at the range but it literally jams every 2 or 3 rounds. Out of approximately 20 mags i have only got it to shoot 2 mags without jamming. 230 fmj should not be hanging up like this. Tried some hollow points same result. I read about changing mags to wilson combat but spending 60$ more seems rediculous. Also the grips come loose everytime out i have to retighten. Are these common problems? I also read that the high polish guns are not test fired after assembly? 3rd and final the spring came and was only seated about a 1/4 inch on the guide rod and would not go on any further so i flipped it around and it slid all the way on the rod is that normal?

Hi, Chris. I have no experience with the high polish R1, mine being the common oxide finish Commander model. However, I do have experience with a couple other problems you're having.

My first 500 +/- rounds included seven different brands of 230 grain FMJ. The R1 struggled with the Magtech brand, but all others performed perfectly. NO FTFeed, no FTFire and no FTE, whereas I had all these symptoms with the Magtech brand. I've fired Remington 230 grain HP ammo as well, with no problems.

Magazines. I've had no problems with the two mags provided with the pistol. I even bought five more after my original purchase and rotate them faithfully when shooting at the range. Never a problem with any of them.

As regards the grips, mine do come loose after a couple hundred rounds. While this is a nuisance, it can be stopped by installing #60 rubber washers in the grip screw holes. Available at Home Depot, Lowe's, etc.

As for test firing, I thought every firearm was test fired after assembly at the factory. Unsure why the R1 high polish stainless would be any different. I've also not seen or heard of problems like you had with the guide rod spring. Hopefully you caught this problem before you tried to fire the pistol. I hope, also, that you gave her a thorough cleaning before your first range day.

For what it's worth, I bought my R1 new in December 2014. It was built in Ilion NY. Some say it's better built than the newer Huntsville models, but I can't testify to that. Mine has 3000+ rounds through it nowadays and still performs flawlessly. I'm an old M1911 Army guy and regular, thorough cleaning is the order of the day. Magazines, too.

Hopefully your R1 is performing better in the year since you originally posted this. Best to you!
