would appreciate suggestions regarding reliable ammo to break the 11-87 Compact Sportsman in. i want to put 200-300 rounds through it to make sure it is reliable for home defense. i put a couple of boxes of Federal through it that jammed about 1/3 of the time.

thanks in advance

An 11-87 shouldn't need anything special for break in. It has large gas ports, and the gas compensation system should take care of everything else.
If you are sure it is clean and you are still having trouble with light loads, make sure you install the gas seal activator. If you do not have one, a slightly larger O ring behind the original should do the same thing. Do not forget to remove it before shooting heavy loads.

appreciate your input. i do have the gas seal activator installed [correctly]. i've got 4 boxes of assorted ammo and as soon as the weather warms up will go to the range. winter refuses to let go.

what ammo [20 gauge] would you use skeet shooting with this gun?

i will report back after more time at the range.

regards

I shoot mostly whatever Wally World has on sale. Mine rip the heads on the Winchester cheapies, but they do cycle.

made it to the range today. low velocity ammo did not cycle at all. had no problem with higher velocity ammo......Winchester AA, PMC both gave no problems. Fiocchi would not cycle. going to pick up some Remington. i'm at least getting familiar with field stripping, cleaning & lube. am going to bypass low velocity ammo, for now. i'm really liking this little shotgun.

appreciate your feedback.

Is your gas seal activator polymer or metal ? I can't remember on the 20 gauge. I have found an oversized O ring works even better than a metal one. I have a friend who loads mouse fart 5/8 ounce loads for his kid and his 11-87 runs them fine, but I will add it is about 15+ years old now. I added an O ring to that one as it predated the gas seal activators. Good luck.

gas seal act. is metal. took it to the range today and fired only Winchester AA. no problems. will put another 100 rounds through it before trusting it [or not] for home defense. am stripping, cleaning and lubing after every range trip.

thanks again

i bought 10 boxes of Rem Gun Club Target Loads [online] $5.75 box/delivered. shot 125 rounds of this ammo with no malfunctions. #8 shot 1200 fps. i've got 250 round through it now and am satisfied it is well broken in. will put another 100 rounds through it before putting it in bedroom for home defense. it is such a simple gun to completely disassemble, clean, lube and reassemble. this is a gun purchase i'm very pleased with. it had a rocky start though.

Keep in mind the 11-87 was designed to function with anything from field loads, 1-1/8 ounce at 1200 fps, on up through 3" Magnums. It was the first shotgun to offer this range. I have never seen one have difficulty within the design limits. The move to lighter loads often yields problems unless you do something to compensate. Once you block the flow path to the gas bypass system it has gas ports bigger than anything else around going straight to the action so it will usually handle anything then.ing heavy loads. Just be sure to remove the GSA or second O ring before shooting heavy loads.

am going to try some Rem Buckshot #3. no doubt it is not a light load, as Remington says it is a good load for deer. have kept everything stock and hope to remain that way.

really appreciate your feedback....if you have a better idea for home defense ammo, i'm all eyes.

no more failures with this little shotgun. am using Slide Glide lite and a very light fully synthetic oil [Liberty oil] . it's been a long time since i've been as pleased with a gun purchase.
