Flooded Timber = Improved Cylinder
Pass Shooting - Full
Over Decoys - Modified
Turkey/Predator - Extra Full

Most common choke tube sizes:

Full- Geese, Fox, Grouse(in open area), Partridge(in open area), Pheasants(long shots), Rabbits (long open shots), Turkey

Improved Modified

Modified- Doves, Pigeons, Ducks, Grouse(in brush), Partridge(in brush), Pheasants(long shots), Quail, Rabbits(brush), Squirrel, Woodcock

Light Modified (also called Skeet 2)

Improved Cylinder- Ducks(small, up to 45 yds), Grouse(in brush), Partridge(in brush), Pheasants (close), Quail, Rabbits(brush), Woodcock(brush)

Skeet (also called Skeet 1)- Skeet, Sporting clays, Defense

Cylinder- Skeet, Sporting clays, Slugs, Defense

Constriction....Diameter

Cylinder = .735
Skeet = .730
Improved Cylinder = .725
Light Modified = .720
Modified = .715
Improved Modified = .710
Full = .705
Extra-Full = .695

Modified = Versatile Choke that delivers wider shot pattern for shooting at 25-45 yards

Improved Cylinder = Short-range choke that delivers wider shot patterns for game within 35 yard

Skeet = Produces 60% pattern in 30" circle at 25 yards

Full = Delivers tight, well-placed shot patterns when shooting between 45-55 yards

Light Modified = Versatile Choke that delivers wider shot pattern for shooting at 20-40 yards

Remington Versa Max ProBore Chokes will have approximately these results with Steel and Lead shot
Constriction =Rem Name =Steel Shot =Lead Shot
.004 =Timber =Improved Cylinder =Skeet
.009 =Over Decoys =Modified =Improved Cylinder
.014 =Pass =Full =Light Modified
.036 =T/P =Extra Full =Full
Yes all 4 are STEEL SHOT rated.

the above pictures are from me shooting the same gun with the same choke at the same distance for all shots. The only thing that changed is the shells fired.
This should show you the importance of finding out what your gun likes.
Every gun, including the Versa Max can and will pattern different with different ammunition.
If I was to change to another choke, I would have to start all over again.
I am pretty sure form this demonstration what I will be turkey hunting with this spring:)

On the advice of Tujays, I put up a target and shot it three times with with Winchester 7.5s to determine where the true POI was. Turns out that the gun was shooting a little low. I inserted the next larger size comb insert and that got me dead on.

I set up a larger target and shot it at 40 yards with Winchester supreme 12 ga 00 buckshot using the "pass shooting" choke tube. I am very pleased with this pattern. A big thanks to Tujays for helping me get my gun shooting an acceptable pattern.

Sorry but the photos didn't turn out as I was using red rosin paper as a target.

I did just as you recommended. I took this fine 8 pointer on Saturday morning as he was being chased by a couple of beagles. 60 steps using Winchester Supreme 3" 00 put this boy right down in two shots.

Tujays can you tell me a little more about the 2 3/4 Win Double X and the Fed 31/2 #6 please. I'm interested in trying these in my gun. I'm not sure which you're using. Is the Fed the FCW? The 23/4 Double X is hard to find. Why do you think the Hevi 13 didn't perform well? To me that doesn't look like enough shot in the pattern. Chief.

The H13 shot a nice tight pattern, but the weight and #4 size means a lot less shot.
If I had this load in 6 or 7 shot it might be much better!

Thank's Tujays that Fed 2oz #6 looks pretty good to me. I'll have try that out of my gun. I already have some Hevi 13 #7 and #6 so will shoot those also. Thank you, Chief.

TuJay I've been looking for those Federal shells and all I can seem to find are the Flight Control wads. From what I've heard FCW's are not all that great. Have you shot them? Any opinions? Chief.

I have not shot them!
I am hoping the store shelves will start to stock turkey loads soon, most are still barren from the recent buying frenzy!

Hey Everybody-new guy here! I bought a MODB VersaMax last October after my Beretta Xtrema 2 failed too many times. I own several vintage Remmys and love the VersaMax so far as well, though I did have some cycling issues with the Remington Sportsman steel loads (thats what i get for buying cheap ammo I guess). I'm planning on using the VM for turkey hunting and patterned the Pro Bore Turkey choke with passable results. I shot @ 40yds with 3 1/2" Federal mag Shok #5s from a standing position with no gun rest. I got 126 pellets on a 10X11 sheet with 29 pellets in a turkey target through the brain and spine-seems pretty good to me for a factory choke! Can't wait for the season to start :D

So I just bought a new Versa Max last week. I plan to use it mostly for waterfowl hunting, however I just got my Turkey license and will be hunting Turkey for the first time. I have a question about the Turkey/Predator choke that comes with the Versa Max: There are no notches in it for me to use the choke wrench/key when putting this choke in. Will hand tightening be sufficient so that it doesn't come loose while hunting/firing? I'm assuming yes, my father is a stubborn old man and says no! LOL
What are people's experiences with this choke?
Thanks, L

Yes just hand tighten and check it every time you use it. No prob.

I've never tightned choke tubes more than finger tight even when using a wrench. The wrench is primarily for flush fit tubes where you can't easily install or remove them by hand.

Hand tight with all extended choke tubes for the Versa Max is fine, just make a effort to check them each time you clean you gun or think about it
