http://www.huntingclub.com/articles/blogs/articletype/articleview/articleid/13310/remington-versa-max-my-next-autoloader

There's one autoloading 12 gauge shotgun that has been responsible for more of my wing-shooting shoulder bruises than any other, hands down—Remington's 11-87. I shed a lot of bird blood with the good ol' 11-87.

We saw good days and bad, and for the most part it held up like a champ. During the years of abuse, I did have some jamming incidents. Most—if not all—jams occurred when the gun was filthy dirty, extremely cold or a combination of both.

At any rate, I'm ready to move on, so I'm in the market for a new all-purpose autoloader. I want a gun that will allow me to shoot clays, turkeys, ducks, geese, pheasants and grouse in the same hunting trip. (Yes, that is possible.) That means the gun must be able to fire a variety of cartridges—small to large—and it better not fail me, not even in the most miserable of conditions. (If I am to make it through and live to write about it, let my shotgun be my pen.)

When I first heard news of Remington's new Versa Max autoloader, I began doing my research. I harassed local sporting goods stores for weeks when I heard it would be hitting store shelves, but it wasn't until SHOT Show last January that I finally got one into my hands. It looked and felt great, but I needed to shoot one. Humbly, this spring I got the green light from Remington to test one for the year.

I patterned it for turkey hunting and I was impressed. The gun fit like an 11-87, but the felt recoil was minimal—even with 3.5-inch turkey loads. But we all know that eight shots at paper don't cut it. I plan to run the Versa Max through the ringer this fall for some "true" testing during warterfowl and upland bird seasons. At the end of the year, I'll send my notes to Remington and make a purchase if the Versa Max treats me well. Thus far, things are looking promising, but I'll keep you posted.

Beyond crushing ducks and other feathered friends this fall, I plan to shatter plenty of clays. Last weekend I spent some time shooting light target loads at clays with the Versa Max. For three consecutive boxes it performed flawlessly. Check out the video below to get in on the action. (Note: No, I don't think I'm Patrick Flanigan, but we all can have a little fun and dream!)

If you've been shooting a Versa Max, I'd love for you to share your thoughts, comments and experiences regarding the shotgun below.

First of all, I am a big fan of Remington guns. I have not had any problems until now, but these are major problems that paying customers need to know about. I purchased my new Remington Versa Max 28’’ barrel in MODB. I thought this would be a great shotgun after reading all of the reviews and reading Remington’s ads. I will tell you my pros and cons with this gun and then a short story on how the Versa Max failed after 1 box of rounds through it and the customer service that I received.
Pros in a nut shell: Great feel, rubber grips, TriNyte finished barrel and nickel/Teflon plated internal components for extreme corrosion resistance, Hi-Viz end sights, comes with nice case, supposed to shoot any load without fail, mostly good reviews
Cons in a nut shell: It is heavy, the back end of the fore-end moves up and down even with the magazine cap fully tightened down, the bolt handle literally fell off into my hand after shooting less than 1 box of shells, the extractor sheared off causing this gun to become a single shot shotgun after 1 box of rounds
Here is my story. I got the Versa Max on Friday 11/30/12. That night I took it apart, cleaned it, and assembled it. When the barrel is removed, there is no play in the fore-end. (PROBLEM #1) When the barrel is installed, the back part of the fore-end moves up and down even with the magazine cap fully tightened down. I went duck hunting the next morning. (PROBLEM #2) During the hunt the bolt handle literally fell off into my hand. I was in waist high water and this piece could have easily been dropped into the water and lost. For those who have not taken one of these guns apart yet, the bolt handle comes off and installs with some force by pulling or pushing. There is a notch in the handle that locks the handle into the bolt assembly and keeps it installed. This piece was fully inserted when I started the hunt. To make sure that I did not lose bolt handle, I kept it in the boat and grabbed it from the boat when I needed to use it. (PROBLEM #3) Shortly into the hunt, this Brand New Remington Versa Max Jammed Every Single Round! At this point I only shot 1 single box of Remington Hyper Sonic 12Ga 3” #2 shot rounds through this brand new shotgun. The extractor sheared off and was completely flush with the bolt head. I am in the middle of my first hunt with this shotgun and the fore end is loose, the bolt handle is in the boat, and my Versa Max shotgun is now a single shot shotgun. I am furious with Remington and the Versa Max.
That Monday morning 12/3/12, I called Remington and told them what had happened. All they said is “OK” and to send it back to the factory via UPS standard ground. The instructions Remington sent me to return the Versa Max said that “our returns process will take approximately 2-3 weeks to complete and a confirmation email will be sent once we have shipped your firearm.” I can’t wait 2-3 weeks! I talked with Remington because I already have a hunting trip planned before 2 weeks and that I need this shotgun to be sent overnight both ways because I already have money invested into this hunting trip. Remington told me that I could pay to overnight the gun, but Remington does not reimburse hunting trips and will not pay to have the gun sent overnight. I do not expect Remington to reimburse me for the hunting trip, but I do expect Remington to do something to make up for this failed gun. This is Remington’s fault and they should pay to get this fix expedited. Not only am I missing out on a big hunting trip, I am also missing out on a lot of local hunting.
I am highly disappointed in Remington’s customer service and the Versa Max. My hunting partner that was with me is about to buy a new 3 ½ “ shotgun and was leaning toward the Versa Max, but after seeing what happened with mine he said that there is no way that he would buy one now.

Lucky for you your new Vmax comes with a Great Remington 2 year platinum warranty. Maybe you could borrow a friends gun until yours comes back. What did you use for a shotgun before the Vmax?

I used to have a Charles Daly synthetic auto loader. It was a cheap Turkish shotgun that was the first gun I bought a long time ago. I sold the Charles Daly and put that money towards the Versa Max. I have not been able to do much hunting the past few years because I have been overseas. Now that I am able to go do something that I love, I don't have a shot gun. Yes the Versa Max has a 2 year platinum warranty, but not having anything for 2-3 weeks until I get the gun back is a disappointment since it broke when only one box of shells were fired through it. Thanks for trying to shine some bright light on the situation.

Caldonba,
FWIW,I have been shooting remington shotguns for over 40 years. When I bought my SP 10 awhile back it wouldn't cycle shells properly.I sent it to Remington and they admitted that the receiver was cut wrong right from the git go.No biggie those things happen. All is good now. What I'm trying to say is that ANY shotgun that is assembly line produced can and will have an issue from time to time.Let them fix it and enjoy your new gun.

Got my new VM Tactical yesterday. Only 100 rounds through so far (out of the box) but all have been flawless. Did a thorough tear down and cleaning today. I was a long time Benelli M1 owner previously. Love the VM so far and am impressed with both the quality and performance!

So Caldonba is a pissed off customer and wants to bad mouth them at every opportunity. Pretty normal, and that is why Remington has changed the way they do business. Now offer a lifetime warranty, and they took a long time debugging the V3 before releasing it for sale. The early VMs did have some issues, all rather quickly fixed by Remington, and at no cost to the customers, but the pissed off customers remain. For some reasons Benellis and Mossbergs seem to get a free pass on any issues. Tujays has thoroughly discussed all things good and bad to begin with about the VMs.
I have a friend who is the service manager at a GM dealership. They once got in a new Corvette with no piston rings installed. Sh*t happens.

Just ordered my Remington Versa Max Waterfowl Pro and wanted to see if anyone has one and what they think about it.

Also, I am a left hand shooter and will be changing over the safety to left hand.

Thanks in advance for you reply.

I'm also a left handed shooter. The righty safety for us isn't too awkward but it would be better if it were switched to lefty. Is that hard to do?

What do I think of it?

That is true for my gun as well. Its really pretty annoying. I don't know why it couldn't have been machined better. Its really wiggly.

I purchased my VERSA MAX SPORTSMAN MOSSY OAK DUCK BLIND end of September 2018.

Out of first 50 rounds I shot, 35-45 failed to discharge or reload the next round. That was opening day  Rounds used were a combination of steel #2 shot in 2.75, 3 and 3.5 inch. The gun is supposed to shoot 3.5's so I was gonna try it out.

I contacted remington and they didn't really care, said to send it in for repair. That made me upset, brand new gun and all, but whatever.

I didn't want to send it during duck season so I cleaned it out really good.
When i cleaned it, there was a ton of shit in there from shooting the first 50 rounds. More gunk than I have ever seen in a shotgun. I think there was some trash oil or something in there from the factory.

I went to sporting clays range to test it out after the cleaning to try to avoid sending it in for repair. I shot 85 rounds of 2.75 inch #6 shot shells, and only one jammed. Then I went hunting and was shooting 3 inch duck rounds and it didn't jam.

I think you have to clean this gun really good before shooting it and it probably won't have this problem.
