Just picked up another project

I had been looking for an 870 Wingmaster project for a long time, they are out there, but I always seemed late to the party.

Anyway I bought this 1955 vintage Wingmaster for $150, I wasn't sure if I wanted to restore it as the finish was pretty decent (pardon the oily fingerprints)

then the Remington gods brought me this

it came to me in parts, I could only find a couple of minor things missing. It is a 1974 vintage with a pressed checkered walnut stocks.

I'll document the restoration here, for the record I am not a professional gunsmith, simply a student of the art

Look forward to seeing your progress and I will be interested in the metal finishing side of things as my Wingmaster is stripped awaiting its refinish, just not sure which way to go. I have Cera-Kote 2 part matt black finish and as I have a synthetic stock on at this time it seemed the way to go, but looking at your other work, I am bending toward getting some wood and blueing

I found some plain walnut police stocks and decided to go with a classic police 870 look. This is the second 870 in the pictures above, the one in pieces....the other one I decided to leave as is.

Here is a teaser shot

I will have the whole process posted to my blog next month

You did a good job sanding and refinishing it.

In all honesty and fairness, mine was in pretty rough shape when I got it too. Not near as rusty as yours was, but there was very little blue remaining on much of it. Matter of fact, I'm not really certain what kind of finish was on the receiver when I bought it. Wasn't paint. Wasn't blue. It was fingernail thick and somewhat plasticky from a lack of better description.

I re-blued mine with Brownells Oxphoblue and then used Norrells Moly socom black over top of that.

That's kind of you, but I know that you have a lot more work in restoring yours. And with as nice as yours is, it really shows.
