New member with a pair of troublesome 597s

I have two Remington 597 models I bought at Dicks back in 2013. Both are quite accurate, and shoot nice. But, neither have cycled ammo worth a darn, and when I tried returning them to Dicks, I was told they don't accept returns...so they've been in the back of one of my gun cabinets. Last week, I contacted Remington, and they said they want both of them in their shop for evaluation. They are sending me two boxes, and have already sent me the shipping information.

Before I send the rifles to them, has anyone had experience with their service before? Will I likely be charged, even though they requested I send them in to them? Their email to me states:

We do apologize for your experience with Remington. We would like to have this firearm brought in for evaluation. Please provide the following information:
Complete name
Physical Address
Telephone
Serial Number

Once this information is received you will be sent a FedEx label that will allow you to send in the defective firearm.
Thank you,
Remington Consumer Services

I know that they only have a 1 year warranty. but I'm not so sure sending them in is the right thing to do, unless it's a known problem that they are repairing free of charge.

Personally, I believe the cycling issue is in the magazines...I don't care for how they are somewhat double stacked without a long enough throat to move them into proper position. I've tried picking up other magazines for them, but with the same issue.

Does anyone have advice to give?

I don't know how their customer service currently is. But, just the fact that they're willing to look at them and sending you two boxes and shipping labels, seems to be about the best they can do at this point.

Whether it is a magazine related issue, or something else, you did contact them wanting it resolved, so I don't see why you wouldn't be willing to let them try to resolve it, whether on your dime or theirs. Just add a note with the guns describing the problem you're having and ask them to contact you with an estimate of what it is going to cost and cross that bridge when you come to it.

Only time I have sent a gun to Remington was when I was having them fit several different barrels to my NEF receiver.

They did a good job, but took about twice as long as I was quoted.

They no longer offer that service, so I'm glad that I did it when I did.

In my experience, cycling issues in rimfire auto-loaders is almost always an ammo issue. Auto-loaders loves them some and hates them some different kinds. What ammo brands have you shot thru it? Remington Thunderbolt is designed to cycle auto-loaders, but sometimes you have to step it up to CCI MiniMags. And keep them clean, clean, clean! Very dirty ammo like CCI Blazer is a quick way to foul any auto-loader.
