I know this is an old thread, but I'm very interested in hunting hogs down in Texas. We have family with some land that has a bit of a problem with wild hogs. I've been invited down to see if I might bag one or two, which sounds like it could be a lot of fun, as long as I'm careful.

What do you all think is an appropriate caliber for wild hogs? A friend hunts with an AR-15 loaded with .300 Blackout. I have 3 ARs, but they're all 5.56. Is that enough gun? I do have a Savage .308 bolt action, but I've been told those pigs are so fast and mean, that a semi is where it's at with those.

Recommendations?

Thanks,
Brad

Can only tell ya the Black Russian and European they had at Tioga can be nasty. Are you referring to feral hogs? Never had the opportunity to hunt in Texas but it sounds fantastic. Have heard of many using the .223 with good effect with the right bullet. Like I stated above I used a Rem. auto in .270 with just the Core-Lokt 130 grainers. Was plenty enough. Flipped em like nothing at 30-40 yards. Great eatin and lots of fun

The post is old, but the game is older. Here in Argentina, there is the hunt of the wild boar (European boar), animal that does not exceed 120kg, and that is an extraordinary weight, usually do not reach 100 kg and hogs or wild pigs, these are domestic pigs that they grow up in the wild forest and weigh up to 250 kg., they are real moles. As for the caliber, usually any 30 caliber is used, the most used are the caliber .300 win. mag, the 30-06 and the .308. Usually they are hunted in nocturnal waitings, or in a few occasions, as I do, in the forest. If you ever decide to visit my country, I will gladly invite you to hunt. I clarify that I do not profit from hunting, I just like to hunt. I hope my English is good and I have been able to explain.

Your English is much better than my Spanish, I assure you.

That's a very generous offer. I think many of us also enjoy hunting.

And it's not even just the thrill of the hunt either. I just enjoy being out there in the woods and forests.

With many Decembers on my back, I enjoy more being inside the forest and polishing my hunting technique than killing my prey. Many times I wonder if I have the right to take the life of a living being, or where it is written that I can do it, that is one more reason to enjoy the hunting technique than the death of my prey. On the other hand, something that I instilled before starting to hunt is respect for my prey, the old man who educated me in the art of hunting, told me these words: "The day you do not respect your prey, hang the rifle , you've lost the respect for hunting and for yourself. " Therefore, change my method of hunting, as I said before, usually the boar is hunted at night lurking, leaving them, where the only thing that the hunter does is sit and wait, I understood that that was not what I wanted and I disliked, therefore, I hunt to the stalker, day, I look for traces, traces inside the forest, I do not use dogs and the optical viewer instead of helping me bothered me, I removed it and I use the open sights my rifle brings. I feel more satisfied and I enjoy it a lot more.

So many people these days and especially with the younger generation never get to experience hunting and nature. They spend most of their days behind electronic devices, which have their place, but watching a video is no substitute for true life skills.

Which I consider hunting to be.

Most people in large cities have a slim chance of survival if the modern chain were to be severely disrupted long term.

And as you said, I have a lot of respect and reverence for any animal that I kill which helps sustain me and my family. Whether it be hunting or even fishing. Trapping. Tracking. Building shelters. Finding and using medicinal plants. All are skills that are being lost generationally.

As you said, hunting isn't just about the hunt. Nor is it about just going into the forest and killing an animal. There is a lot more to it than that. At least the way that I was raised and feel about it.

The time that I spend in the forest is spiritual and meaningful.

Your words are right ...
I believe and without error to make a mistake, I hope I'm wrong, the hunters are a species in extinction. Usually, I am a lone hunter, but sometimes when some rookie in the hunt and some not so novice asks you to take it with me, I do not refuse and I do, but to this day, all those that I have taken they have shown me that the only thing that interests them is to kill, no matter the method, the quantity or species, the only thing is to kill for the simple fact of killing .... bad omen ... and I do not say it because I believe myself a hunter experienced, on the contrary, I always said that I am a hunter's apprentice, every hunt is an exam.
Therefore, nowadays, when they ask me to take them to hunt, I do not refuse but before I ask them to answer a single question: "With what do you hunt?" .... and after they answer me, my answer is always the same: Give a blind man your big rifle and look and everything and tell me what hunting?
