Black Bear hunters .... spring is coming!

Our season here runs over winter from August to May to allow for cubbing. So as the snow melts off, the sedge grasses green up in the tidelands, and the black bears awake. Spring black bear, having burned off all the fat, makes a great eat and the hide (if you get them before they rub) is luxurious.

Any black bear hunters here?

I certainly would be if our state had half logical bear seasons. But as it stands, they prefer to have them for tourism purposes hoping they'll bring in a dollar, so they're mostly on the protected species list despite being far too over-populated in our area to naturally sustain their numbers.

Exhibit A:

Our bear season is what they call a quota hunt, which usually has a cap of 10 bears even if they are all killed on the first day that blocks the 2nd day from being used.

The entire season is typically only the Saturday and Sunday before Christmas, which as we both know they'll likely be denning during that time.

I think that was intentional to just throw us a little bone. They "gave" us a season that we have been screaming for over the last 18 years or so, but was mostly a compromise to appease the anti-hunting animal rights groups.

I'll be honest, I would love to be able to make a bear claw necklace, but that's about all that I'd want with them. As I mentioned earlier, they're more of a nuisance animal to me than anything. I'm tired of dragging my garbage bins out of the road and having to serve as an armed guard to watch over the kids just so they can play in the yard without getting charged or in danger.

They have worn their welcome out with me long ago.

I hope you get one.

Or ten of them.

Looking forward to seeing the pictures.

Nice pics fellas!

Likely going for a day hunt next week. Hitting an area a little closer to home as time is limited for both my hunting partner and I. Haven't done much recon in this area so it's unlikely we'll nab one but who knows?

Going mid-week so hoping to avoid much competition...but its only about an hour or so from town.

Winter snows have only retreated up the mountain sides in the last month and this place is about 1000-2500ft lower elevation than we normally frequent. Bears should be down low in the valley bottoms now foraging what they can.

Spent a nice day last week hunting along Harrison Lake and Harrison River. Didn’t see one single bruin. The night before I left, the wife and I were walking along the dike in town and spotted a young black bear who had treed himself just before we walked past. You know how you get that feeling like...friggin great! Just saw the only bear I’m gonna see...It wasn’t wrong. LOL

What is the cost to hunt a black bear?

I'd have to look up the out-of-State tags and fees. For me it's nothing, as they are literally everywhere here in the South East rain forests. I just drive out the road to a few known spots, and set up in late afternoon.

Very kind for your response. It must be exciting to hunt a bear.
Is the bear meat tasty?

Spring black bear is, when they have burned off all the winter fat. Almost like pot roast, and makes great chili and sausage. We are not required (here) to harvest the meat off fall black bears because once they eat a lot of salmon, the meat is pretty pungent. Especially if they have gotten into trash. Trash bears smell like, well, trash....
